Week Eighteen: Minnesota Vikings (14-2) @ Detroit Lions (14-2)
NYLion replied to MichiganCardinal's topic in Detroit Lions
Not just Goff but Sewell, Ragnow, Decker, Zeitler, Glasgow, Montgomery, Gibbs, St. Brown, Jamo, Patrick, LaPorta etc. The Lions are loaded with talent and guys who live and breathe football. Even on defense when healthy they're loaded with talent and, the same, guys that are all about football and buy in. Hell, they even have an elite kicker now. Any reasonable football mind would do big things with all that talent so while there may be a small hit with Ben and AG leaving as they adjust schemes with them gone, I don't see it derailing this team at all. -

I'm not worried about losing either coordinator tbh. This is arguably the best roster in the league led by one of the best coaches in terms of leaders and football smarts in the league. This isn't a roster that's propped up by their coordinators in the least so I'm sure Brad and Dan have a proper succession plan in place. With Brad continuing to piece together the roster and Dan coaching it, I truly believe they can plug anybody remotely competent into the coordinator roles and this team won't miss a beat. The biggest inhibitor to long long term success is the salary cap and not enough cap to keep all the players but with the way the Lions draft I'm not too worried about that either. This is trending to be a Steelers/Ravens type of franchise with stability and years/decades of success ahead as long as Brad and Dan are steering the ship funded by Sheila and led by Spielman. -
Yeah, I'm hoping it's a clean break as opposed to a torn achilles or something which could have way longer than this season effects or be career altering. I have no idea what the Pistons can do now. Ivey was one of two players that couldn't afford to lose and with such a huge talent deficiency as is I don't see how this doesn't sink their season.

Week Seventeen: Detroit Lions (13-2) @ San Francisco 49ers (6-9)

That's more a testament to the ridiculously great seasons Allen, Jackson and Barkley are having than Goff being overlooked. Add in the underrated Baker Mayfield to the top 5 with Darnold getting an HM and this is one of the strongest MVP races we've seen in a long time. -

Man, you just know the media is going to run with the Vikings are the better team narrative this week and Dan Campbell wouldn't have it any other way. -

Probably the Bucs players too at the likely outcome they're the ones facing the Lions in the 1st round. -

They should be embarrassed and so should Glenn. This isn't just a personnel issue, guys look utterly confused. Shanahan is taking AG to the cleaners. -

How can anybody have any confidence in this team with this defense? They're bringing a knife to a gunfight with this defense against playoff offenses. Could be a one and done team very easily if the offense isn't picture perfect. -

Yep, I said the same earlier in the thread but that's not how Dan Campbell does things, he's full throttle all the time. Personally I think it's reckless to bring that mentality into tonight so I'll be cringing with every starter that looks like he might be injured and there will be a few because it's NFL football and it's a violent sport. Hopefully it's not a serious enough injury to derail their SB hopes, for the sake of going all out to win a relatively meaningless game. -
I'm saying to only rest some guys especially on defense. I'd rest Za'Darius Smith and Arnold to name two, the depth is just way too paper thin at those positions.
-
There's no reason for them to do that IMO. Why? As I said before, treat it like a second bye week especially for the guys that are a bit banged up.
-
So since the Niners game is meaningless I'd be resting some guys. They should treat it like a second bye week. The Lions depth is already thin as is on defense so it would be foolish to play everybody.
-
I just think they need to make it work. He's young enough to be a key part of this team for the next few years.
-
What a wild finish, biggest win in a long time. I think they need to re-sign Beasley, he fits like a glove here.
-
Absolutely horrendous execution down the stretch again, seems to be a common theme even in the wins that they luck out (close wins). Great game before that but then everybody including Cade completely clammed up in the last 3 minutes, this keeps happening when does it end?

I forgot that they could still drop to 7th but, still, it's not the same motivation as locking up a playoff spot. -

There's a very good chance that this is a meaningless game. The Packers are going to have nothing to play for and could very well rest starters so it's looking more than likely that it's coming down to the final game. I'd rest some starters against the Niners once the Vikings beat the Packers especially on defense where they can't afford any more injuries. -

Massive loss by the Eagles. All the Lions have to do is win next week and they're clear of Philly. Now the Vikings need to be the ViQueens against Seattle and the Lions can clinch the 1 seed next week -

I don't get why they kicked the FG at 34-14 either. They're waiving the white flag on the season -

MAybe but the difference between 37-17 and 34-17 at this point in the game is minimal. Go for the killshot there -
Cade is a legit All Star, it's a testament to how weak the roster is around him that they're only 12-17. A player playing at his level deserves a better record. Ivey looks like an above average starter at times but then fades away at other times and they have one of the weakest 3-5 trios in the league. If Langdon brings in, lets say, a high level Stretch 4 this team could jump into the lower end of the playoff race not just play-in maybe even a bit higher the way Cade is playing. Banchero has Wagner plus a bunch of other solid players, SGA has Chet and a bunch of other dudes, Tatum has Brown, Luka has Kyrie, the Rockets have a bunch of guys that chip in etc. Cade has Ivey sometimes and ???Cade needs help, he's too good to be barely holding down a play-in spot in a horrible east.

Was just going to post this. Forget all the crap I just said, I'm all in now. Who's running through the wall with me? -

Campbell and Barnes play different positions, Levi yes but he has to stay healthy, we'll see on Iffy, Arnold hasn't played #1 corner like Sutton did last year so that's a wait and see. Even if I agree with you on all that, Hutch and McNeil are massive subtractions from last years NFC Championship defense. The Lions are likely going to have to win a bunch of shootouts to win a Superbowl. The offense is capable but that's an enormous ask of the offense to be nearly perfect every playoff game against playoff defenses and even they are down their 1b running back. They have to get the 1 seed and more importantly the bye to have any chance. -
Lots of turnovers and bad shots in the 4th AGAIN although in fairness to him he had zero help out there. Could have used Ivey in those moments.

Hutch+McNeil+Barnes+Iffy (who was a major factor in the playoffs) vs. Smith+Reader. Arnold and Sutton are pretty much a saw-off. We'll see if Anzalone comes back at 100%, if not that's another big loss. Maybe Iffy comes back and gives them a boost but his health is always.... Iffy. The defense is considerably worse now. With that said, I was kind of doom and gloom yesterday due to the initial shock of all the season ending injures being still fresh but I'm in a different mindset this morning of just choosing to be enjoy the rest of the season, it's been a fun ride. What else can we do? No use stressing out over something as trivial as football so I'll just cheer on the team without the weight of expectations and worry of failure and hope for the best.
