Well, a 17 year old isn't a grown adult. People get stronger after 17.

Baseball is like a roller coaster, streaks one way and then the other.

They could change the outcome of the 1985 WS because of one of the worst calls in mlb history.
-
The funny thing is those other team's are looking at their games with the Tigers and saying the same thing that they should win most of those.

I was a kid and asked Gibson for an autograph and he actually signed. Surprised after hearing stories about him later. When Stafford was the QB for Detroit, he was at a Pistons game and these two kids went up to him and asked for an autograph, he was getting ready to sign when his boss interrupted and told the kids to get lost. He meekly shook his head no to the kids as Kelly gloated over the kids. Just another reason I dislike her.

2024 - 2025 Detroit Tigers Offseason

The only people who want this type of crap are people who don't watch or care about baseball anyway. This is just an example of an institution or organization that cater to the 1% vocal extreme that doesn't buy or consume a product yet demand it changes. -
I wouldn't be a bit surprised if mlb doesn't step in and beg some of the teams that are out of contention to play some of their younger guys so the CHIsox can win a few games at the end of the season. I suspected the league told the Twins and Royals or whoever the Tigers were playing at the end of the 2003 to call off the dogs. They won 5 out of 6 to end the season.

And addressing the SP injuries, it really is unbelievable that an organization could not have depth at AAA to bring up several guys that can keep you in ballgames...maybe give the team 5 or 6 innings with a 4.50 ERA or something close to that. There are washed up vets, career minor league pitchers who might have had a few starts in the majors, or younger guys ready to go. Yet, the Tigers had none of those. And what kind of GM doesn't plan for injuries to the SPs? There really aren't any guys that could have been signed that can't give a team similar levels of production as Mize or Maeda? It makes me believe that a. Ilitch is unwilling to spend what amounts to loose change to have some vets in AAA ready to come up and pitch when inevitable injuries happen. b. Harris is indeed as lazy and incompetent as many people believe. Or c. They just dont care about the product at all. I just don't know what other options it could be. How can an organization not plan for something that 100% is going to happen.
-
One way to avoid this is to have a decent minor league system. I know everyone was screaming at the Orioles that they should have emptied out the minor leagues to get players at the deadline, but if an injury happens they call up a top prospect. That doesn't mean those guys are going to be stars but they have the potential to be good players. Plus they are not tied to paying average mlb players a bunch of money to retain them as they can replace them. I think it is important to have some up and coming starters or vets that are in AAA that can be plugged in the rotation when an injury happens. But injuries aren't an excuse for a front office because every team is going to have injuries during the season. Some franchises plan for it better. It says a lot about the organization that the Tigers need to have 3 bullpen days and throw a below average starter for day 4 to go with Skubal. Poor player development and acquisition on their part.

I think teams are more careful with players now. Look at how the Nationals handled Strausburg. In the 80s, he would have pitched 200 innings and had Dusty Baker ( ruined Wood and Prior) or Billy Martin ( ruined the entire A's pitching rotation) been his manager, probably at least 275 with 130+ pitches per game.
-
Their pitching has been really good for the most part and that has been keeping the team in games. Their offense has not been some juggernaut.
-
I didn't even notice that Ozuna is leading the NL in avg and RBI and tied with HRs. 3 players have legit shots to win the triple crown this season.
-
Every prospect in the Tigers system is going to be a major star. Get with the program.
-
Dang. Both Judge and Ohtani could win the triple crown this year. Judge is .024 points out of first for avg. He leads in hr and rbi. Ohtani is 6 rbi out if first. He leads in avg and hrs.
-
The lineup they trotted out today was just a slap in the face to the fans. 5 guys hitting under .200, and 3 other guys under .250. If most of those guys are on the roster next season, the GM and owner simply hate the fans.
-
Bonds saw 2 guys who weren't even remotely close to his skill set break the home run record without any repercussions. Of course Bonds was going to take them.
-
Roids don't make you a great ballpayer. You still have to hit the ball. Plus, 95% of the players were on them. It didn't work out as well for all of them.
-
I have no idea what you want me to say about it. Isn't it kind of obvious? Guys wouldn't have quit in the past because they had his issue because... Players who walked away wouldnt have been paid. Normal people cant just quit their job because they wouldnt get paid. People in most countries would starve to death because they would have no way of supporting themselves. People have to work or do something to support themselves and their family and struggle through anxiety. He got paid and commanded a large enough salary where he could get by in life.
-
They are a lot more careful with injuries today than they were in the past. Also, players didn't want to come out of the lineup with a small injury because they could be replaced. I think players are mentally different today too than in years past. You would never have seen someone like Austin Meadows back in years gone by.

Short Round.

Ilitch doesn't care about winning. He makes tons of cash off TV deals. He even makes his players dress up in stupid little Caesars gear when they hit a home run. I had half expected Skubal be dealt with Baez and have the other team pick up his contract for lower prospects just so he could dump payroll. I wouldn't be surprised if Boras isn't chatting up Harris and Ilitch to trade Skubal in the off season to get him out of this organization.
-
Glad to see Hinch is still smarter than everyone else by continuing to use Miller in high leverage situations. I get it that Harris has assembled a garbage roster, but really?
-
Bonds 2001-2004 was the most ridiculous stretch ever. They wouldn't pitch to him and he was still hitting at least 45 HRs a season in that stretch. He could have legitimately hit 100 HRs in one of those seasons had they not walked him so often.

I played one year in college and everything moves and seems to happen so much faster than in high school. I assume it's like that every level you go up. And don't even get me started on sliders.

Maybe they can just set a pitching machine up some innings.
