There will probably never be another guy like Nolan Ryan ever. I guess, Randy Johnson and Roger Clemens were guys that could throw super hard for a long career and never were injured. And even though they were both much better pitchers than Ryan, they didn't have the freak arm that Ryan did. It might come down to just luck or training habits. I really don't know. Verlander until he was about 36 or 37 was extremely durable. If I was a young pitcher, I wouldn't want to pitch a bunch of innings either, hoping my arm would last until I could get a second contract. And teams don't want their guys getting injured, but what incentive do the Pirates have to protect Skenes? There is a 0% chance he stays with the Pirates once he becomes a FA. If they are in the playoffs, why wouldn't you pitch him as much as possible?

Dusty Baker destroyed Mark Prior's and Kerry Wood's careers. Some games those guys were throwing over 130 pitches a game at 22 and 23 years of age. Those two guys had the talent to be potential HOFers Dusty ruining those guy's careers is right up there with Billy Martin destroying his young starters on the A's and the most egregious destruction of a young pitcher, Davey Johnson, pitching Gooden almost 750 mlb innings by time he was 21. Johnson doesn't get nearly enough hate for what he did to Gooden when he was so young. Tarik Skubal has 699 career mlb innings and I would bet he has never thrown anywhere near 120 pitches a game.

I was just a real young kid, but I remember Billy Martin pitching young guys a ridiculous amount of innings, sometimes with 150 pitches a game. Those guys were washed up by time they were 26. Dusty Baker before there was Dusty Baker, ruining guy's careers.

Talk radio and junk like espn with the stupid talk shows where some d-bag throws out his opinion like it's 100% the truth is kind of like a message board...oops...wait...kind of like this except we don't get paid and most of us don't take ourselves seriously.

I agree with that. They usually just cut pay roll and get cheaper players. A main reason players leave teams like Detroit is because they won't spend money like the top half of the league. Pizza Boy isn't suddenly going to be throwing out money to people. They force the players to wear that stupid little Caesars pizza garbage when they hit a home run just to try to get some free publicity. Tacky and cheap.

This is a big reason why the Tigers could get rolled early in playoffs. Offense shut down by quality pitcher and Tigers starters give up runs early.
-
Why should they? The play should have been made and an out recorded. Pitching and fielding are separate.

I wonder if one of the Texas teams will throw a bunch of cash at him? Phillies? Ilitch isn't anything like Caesar. He's more like Nero or Elagabalus. Sorry for the historical references

I would almost think the Tigers won't even offer a contract to Skubal. They realize there is a 0% chance of his signing with Detroit. And if anything it will be a non-serious lowball offer When was the last time those big contracts actually worked out? The last 6 or 7 years of Cabrera were terrible. Trout's is looking horrible. Harper's is looking like a huge contract to an average 1st baseman. Guerrero's contract will be a disaster. It's not my money, so whatever.

Why would they be afraid of those guys reverting back to McKinstry and Baez? So basically they would revert back into a Trey Sweeney type of player? -
That seems like a lot for a team to cough up for 1 year if Skubal. The Tigers couldn't get a package even close to that last year near the trade deadline and that would have been 2 and a half years of team control. And the team that is going to sign him as a FA would likely just wait until he is a FA.

Why does Trey Sweeney have a roster spot? Easily a bottom 3 shortstop in the league. -
They better go all in now and pick up some arms and a few bats. Skubal will be gone soon.
-
Sandy Alcantara? Why would any team want him for a playoff run? He's the worst starting pitcher in the league. It's not hard to find a guy who gives up almost 8 runs per 9 innings. A team looking for a reclamation project is about it And people are really over valuing Jung's value. A guy who has no position and has struggled at the plate is not going to return a lot

In his last 3.1 IP, 14 ER for 38.18 ERA for Kahnle -
Do you really think they are going to pitch him that much if they keep the huge lead in the division? I don't think it makes any sense to not lessen his load.

Stieb and Key were both better than Morris, and I don't even think it's close. Morris won more games and that was when wins were seen as the ultimate pitching stat. But he's way behind in WAR, ERA, WHIP Morris might be the worst modern day pitcher to get inducted in the HOF. -
AL Cy Young should be interesting. Brown, Fried, deGrom, Skubal, Bubic, and Crochet all with eras under 2.26. Four of those guys with whips under .95.

The playoffs will all come down to staying healthy and if the Tigers can find a #2 & 3 option along with some bullpen arms. I wouldn't mind the team ligthening Skubal's load a bit after the AS break. Can Mize be relied on? I have never been a fan of his stuff...even when drafted I didn't think he would be anything better than a #3 guy. But he has been effective so far. Jury is still out. What after those two? Yikes. -
Teams dont trade a guy who will hit 30+ homers during a playoff run to get a player at another position.
-
Maybe just want to wait until these guys play a game above A-ball before we put them in the MLB all time great category.
-
What a dumb*ss. 11 years for $182 million. Hope sleeping with a 14 year old girl was worth it. This dude is Mel Tucker level of stupid; although still has a way to go for Aaron Hernandez level.

He pitched in Japan from 2022 to 2024, so he was out if t he country for 3 years.

Jesus Pinto...was his dad cursing at his old, junky car?

Too bad the Tiger pitcher wasn't Jacob degrom.
