  1. LITB was the pre-revolutionary vanguard probing the defenses of fortress "Father Knows Best"
  2. Exactly. I would still argue that the problem with NATO funding was not as simple as Trump wanted to make it. For Germany increasing defense spending - to start becoming an effective military power, almost could not, and maybe should not, have happened exactly until there was a threat with a clearly defined moral dimension for it to be in response to. Otherwise re-arming was going to invoke a lot of cultural trauma. The case now is clear enough that those proper reservations are swept away. And Germany was the fulcrum because as the most efficient economy in Europe, every other NATO country begrudged spending more of their GDP than Germany did because it just made them less economically competitive in the EU.
  3. I'd put it the other way. In the 50's no one was allowed to be offensive, thus it was much easier not to be offended.
  4. Like everything else in the 50's the bad news was suppressed. Under the 'covers' so to speak, I would posit that the most traumatic thing about the 50's for even the supposedly favored white society was probably the skyrocketing divorce rate. Traumatic because no-one had experience in how that was supposed to work, so divorces were messier, more angry, more guilt ridden, more tied up in courts, and the fallout for children far worse than today when people have learned to accept that it's OK for a relationship to fail and that families can be 'blended' and all the other social coping strategies that have emerged. For me the essential truth about the 50's was that our parents generation basically got to the end of WWII with a massive case of cultural PTSD. They had been through depression and war and they were simply done wanting to be engaged in *anything* that upset any one's apple cart. So things got very rigid and ossified, but in a very quiet, suppressed, individual by individual kind of way - and that is what set the stage for the great conflict with their children, who couldn't understand why their parents were so deliberately blind to so much starting to go wrong around them.
  5. right, the Beatles were a primary vehicle by which the youth wrested command of culture from their parents. Sociologically that was huge, but that doesn't mean I want to be stranded on a desert island with "I Want to Hold Your Hand" !
  6. There was a story back in the day that when Dylan heard the Turtles version of It ain’t me babe, that he didn’t recognize it as something he wrote.
  7. Trevor Story to Beantown 6/140 (sound vaguely familiar?). Initial plan is he moves to 2b and Bogaerts stays at SS (wouldn't be my choice!) https://www.detroitnews.com/story/sports/mlb/2022/03/20/red-sox-sign-rockies-ss-trevor-story-play-2-b/7117373001/
  8. I don't see how it works. There are only two ways to remove Putin, the Army, or a bullet. Hard to imagine anyone left close enough to him with the courage to kill him, and the Russian army? Has never been their style.
  9. the other thing with the Beatles if you are just my age was that pretty much except for side 2 of Abby Road, their celebrity had eclipsed their music. Nobody thought Rocky Racoon was great music, but we did spend hours taping the White Album anyway so we could play it backwards trying to solve the deeper mysteries of existence, or Paul's lack thereof.....
  10. It will be interesting to see if Correa out produces Donaldson this season. I guess Minny is moving Arraez to 3rd, so if Donaldson vs Correa is a wash then you are really looking at Arraez vs Simmons which would be an improvement, but none of that addresses their pitching. Minny's problem was runs allowed, and that wasn't because they had Donaldson and Simmons on the left side. Normally the fact that they got younger by moving on from Donaldson and Simmon is a plus, but if Correa is just a rental.... But no doubt it works better for MN with Austin Martin and Royce Lewis in the wings than it would for Det.
  11. LOL - still, it does matter if you don't see anyone in your system that is going to be at SS in 2023.
  12. He had some pretty devastating stuff when he 1st got to pro ball - threw a no-hitter at AA IIRC, then there were velo issues then the TJ. There could still be some serious talent there, or the physical window may have closed for him. But he and Wentz and Brieske will be the arms to watch for the chance of a break-out this season.
  13. Beatles and Zep are too much apples and oranges to even try to compare. Beatles were song writers first and foremost. For Zep the 'songs' were really pretty secondary - they were just the scaffolds to hang their sound painting on. But jf you asked me which I would miss more if I could never hear a track again, it would be Zeppelin. But in part that's probably because of how old I am. I wasn't quite old enough for the Beatles music to mean as much to me when I first heard it as Zeppelin's did. Heck, to my HS cohort, the second side of Abbey Road was definitely a statement the Beatles could play in the album rock genre if they put their mind to it, but to us they were playing catch-up to what we were already listening to on WABX. So there is no way to separate that personal history from an 'objective' analysis. But that said, I listen to a lot more classical music than either today.
  14. Devastating news. Reports are he will pull through.
  15. Minnesota's #1 and #2 prospects are SS. Correa as a one year rental is probably fine to them. We have Baez for 2 yrs (or more) at age 29. If he walks at 31 I'm not going to be heartbroken. But I wouldn't be all that wild about investing 35M in Correa at age 27 and only having 1 yr committed - seems like a waste unless you were sure he puts you over the top, which would be a silly thing for either MN or DET to believe.
  16. Still a bit surprised the Twins were willing to go that AAV.
  17. A lot more drama in that graphic than in the trade I'm afraid.
  18. Soto and Skubal pitched well, and Faedo is a prospect again. Life is good.
  19. Nivaldo Rodriguez gives up a grand slam. Ooops.
  20. The too long delayed debut of Alex Faedo on the mound for the Tigers. Walk, GO/FC, WP, IF single/error, K, GO. FB 94-95. The year Faedo struggled his velo was down. Be interesting to see where he tops out if he can throw 95.
  21. Reyes with a 13 pitch AB - finally popped out.
  22. Soto throwing 98 but a little wild. Mid-season form.
  23. 4K in two IP for Skubal, who looks like he put on a few pounds in the lower body.
  24. Baddoo having problems getting the ball out of his glove. Double clutched on the Kiner single then did it again and then almost threw it into the stands after the nice running catch....
