  1. I'll give you that if he and UM were to part ways at the end of this season ( which at this point with 10 wins probable is highly unlikely) I'd put his chances of landing in the NFL is definitely better than another college gig. One thing he doesn't seem cut out for is a transition to broadcasting......
  2. that's in interesting concept. You are bad - you spend a little money to get better and that leverages you into better draft picks? On first hearing I like that -- but you'd have to game out all the possible ways to abuse it. Maybe you don't want to get too much better in one year because if you spread your improvement over a couple years you might get 2 #3s as opposed to 1 #1? That wouldn't be so bad but what if it ends up encouraging a team to *really* tank to have a low winning % in year zero to bootstrap themselves into top pick the next year? Do you want to penalize a team with solid management that suffers a bunch of injuries one year? I like the base concept but as always the devil would be in the details.
  3. HaHa! that would be fun. But probably more chaos if the conf champ game winner and all the the other B10 teams have two losses. OSU with a win in the conf championship and only losses to top 10 teams probably still gets some consideration. But if Wisc wins the conf game at 3 losses and everyone else has at least two - I think that makes it an easier decision to leave the B10 at home.
  4. needless to say it's been in mine (UMich) for awhile now. Some embrace it, some ignore it. We do see students who have re-assigned.
  5. Did anyone see Scott Boras' comments at the GM meetings? Apparently he went off on deadline deals ruining the game for the fans as tanking teams allow other teams to completely rebuild after mid-season - I guess the implication being that teams trying to build the right way and their fans end up screwed.
  6. pretty much nails it....
  7. Do they though? The Dodgers yes, the Yankees, Mets and Padres not so much recently. Braves, White Sox, Brewers, Tampa were all under ~$153M with the league average of 128M. Definitely true that If you are near the bottom you are very likely bad, but being at the very top doesn't seem to buy you much of anything. The luxury tax does function as a defacto salary cap and teams that get too much money tied up in too few players for too long do tend to suffer for it. There is a sweet spot and it probably lines up pretty well with Avila's 'drunken sailor' concept. https://www.spotrac.com/mlb/payroll/2021/
  8. the Fisher deal is insanity. A&M has met the Al Avila definition of sotted sea dog. I can imagine people in the finance offices at A&M silently praying everyday someone does make him an offer that he accepts and gets them out from under an almost 9 figure liability....
  9. I've heard Harbaugh does not retain professional representation - maybe you should offer your services...
  10. They still have some picks stockpiled don't they? My nagging fear is that they are going to play themselves out of any more high picks before there is enough in the pipeline behind Edvinssion and Berggren
  11. I'd like to see him play without the trapezoid. Which is about the dumbest rule in hockey IMO. Why the he** should a team be penalized because their goalie can play hockey?
  12. in the absence of a better option, the emoj looks suitable as a wry face or irony. I don't much care what the forum SW wants to call it. They are visual cues so they are what they look like, not what the forum SW decides to tag them. Call it the Humpty Dumpty approach to emojis.
  13. Terrible 15 min to start the 3rd period. Nedeljkovic should have been 1st star.
  14. true - the old saying holds - you are either adding players to get better or you are getting worse. Most good teams are already too old not to get worse if they stand still.
  15. Not clear yet Faedo will be pitching anywhere before June, but we can hope.
  16. Big Ben out for tomorrow https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/32624563/pittsburgh-steelers-qb-ben-roethlisberger-placed-reserve-covid-19-list-sunday-vs-detroit-lions
  17. I doubt they pay anyone 300M either - I wouldn't. I don't know how good Petzold's sources or research is, but he predicted less than 200 million for all the SS except Seager and Correa. I can easily see the Tigers going 6/126 (Petzold's prediction) for Story if he can really be had for that.
  18. In MI a judge can direct the jury to submit an acquittal ( sort of "throwing out" a possible guilty verdict? ) if he makes a showing the prosecution did not present the required elements to make the case. That's probably a high bar in most cases but it's on the books here.
  19. In 85 there was not that much turnover, that came later, but Career years from Petry, Wilcox, Hernandez, Lopez and even Juan Berenguer in 84. One Walt Terrell didn't close the pitching gap in 85 which was 45 more runs allowed. On the other side, they scored a hundred less - down years from Trammell. Johnson gone. Lemon and Herndon less productive in 85. Evans had a big year in '85 but he was about the only one to have a better 85 than 84. 9 regulars in 84 at OPS+ of 99 or more. Only 5 in '85
  20. and why is the wife even still with a guy who doesn't stand up for her? A perfect pair maybe?
  21. LOL - Hard to see how anyone could have watched MI over Harbaugh's tenure and still be excited about him for an open position. It might be next yr, or it might be 10 yrs, but I think he's done coaching after Michigan.
  22. I think McNamara is proving to be a lot better than people are giving him credit for. I wish they would let him do a little more. There were two throws in the one series that were bad misses today but I'm going to bet his receivers had gone the wrong way both times. Funny thing is that since OSU will likely beat MSU, UM will still have 'their fate in their hands' on the 27th - for how much good that will do them!
  23. Yup. And intelligent pacing is important in a hockey game and I think the way they opened the game dominating the play but unable to score led them to overextend themselves early and they got caught a little gassed when the Caps turned it on themselves later in the period and they couldn't answer. Once they were up by two the Caps bolted it down. Call it being rope-a-doped by a more experienced (and better overall) team.
  24. I wouldn't even run up tempo against them all the time - you can just keep it in your hip pocket because if you just spring a quick play on them occasionally you will catch them almost every time.
