There was also Bernie Sanders getting absolutely flamed in his Twitter replies for recognizing the anniversary of the Tree of Life Synagogue Massacre iirc. I'm sure those were all closet Trumpers too.

For sure, there may be other issues at play. And we don't know his politics one way or another at this point. Either way, there have been plenty of examples of leftist anti-semitism that have come out over the past few days and weeks and it's a little frustrating that we are having debate about whether something that is clearly happening is actually happening.

I have no clue, but having spent a little time around Ithaca in my life, I'm guessing it's a pretty good possibility.

This is all fine and dandy and all, but we have Hamas representatives out there saying Israel should be annihilated. To be clear, I don't know what the solution is at this point because it is all incredibly messy. I have a lot of issues with Israel's government and the extent to which they created this reality. But the idea that they are gonna just ceasefire at this point or that they even should be expected to, in the context of October 7th or what Hamas' leadership believes about Israel, is just fantasyland.

Honestly, this comment and reply is probably a succinct way to characterize what I find frustrating about the entire dialogue surrounding this, at least in the social media sphere anyway.

I think this is right, for what it's worth. But by that same token, I'm not of the view that "liberals" should feel a need to rationalize why people are acting out in anti-Semitic ways... I don't think threats to Cornell's Jewish community or some of the other incidents of antisemitism that have manifested themselves since Oct 7 can simply be explained away as "thoughtful disagreements about the nature of Israel's government or Benjamin Netanyahu". There's only one way to explain things like that IMO.

Just my two cents: since moving across country, we have cut cable and this has had a significant impact on our ability to watch this year's postseason. Especially given that most non-WS games are on cable networks. Maybe if the Tigers make it in future years I'll sign up for a service during the postseason, but I just didn't care enough to pay the money for that option this postseason.

Maybe Fox News should be checked for dementia. Sad.

One other thing: Wadea Al Fayoume, the 6 year old who was murdered a couple of weeks ago in Illinois, was from our new area... drive by the house a decent amount even. When it happened, the condemnation was universal and for good reason: Islamophobia is unacceptable, without condition. Jewish leaders in the Chicago area expressed those same thoughts, unequivocally. Because it was Islamophobia and it needs to be acknowledged. So when you see what happen like what happened in Ithaca with a dorm hall being threatened and police officers having to be brought in to offer protection, a simple acknowledgment that it is antisemitism seems to be a pretty reasonable ask.

There were some initial reactions to October 7th, IMO, but they are completely memory-holed for a lot of the loudest voices. Like, a lot of the pro-Palestinian types I see on the news or online just seem to pretend or ignore that even happened, when it's a pretty significant piece of context as to why everything since has transpired. And yeah, I think that overlooking the initial event is intentional for some as well.

So these guys take an issue that most every member of Congress would be willing to fund and then proceed to tie it to something that will never get Democratic votes. And that by many accounts, would increase the deficit. If Republicans in Congress believe funding for Israel is important, maybe they would act a little more serious

You are exactly right. And just as one rightly criticizes the racists who have been given license by US conservative figures, it seems like the same level of consistency needs to be applied toward who give antisemitism license.

The many instances of colleges and universities releasing wishy-washy statements in the aftermath of the initial attacks, given how zealous many of these same institutions ordinarily are to issue statements on any number of other outrages, is pretty telling as well.

Not sure what this has to do with Jewish students facing threats or campus police having to be stationed outside of a Cornell dining hall. Criticism of Netanyahu or the Likud Party? Fine by me, he's terrible and bears a lot of responsibility for this crisis. Criticism of Israel's policy vis a vis Palestine? Fair game as well. But I think we can all see that there are instances on the left where it has gone beyond policies or Israel's current government and has entered into antisemitic territory... and that is unacceptable. Full stop, and without any "whataboutisms".

Yeah, that's probably how I proceed going forward. At least will try it anyway in the short term. Sports and a couple other areas of interests to myself make it hard to walk away completely, but the reality is that my internal pendulum is swinging pretty hard against using the platform going forward without making serious changes. It's just gotten extremely ugly and misinformation is rampant. I think the "For You" thing, and how I think they, in subtle ways, push you toward that feed really angers me though. It seems like that feed is way more toxic than the real time feed and that it's intentional

The degree to which antisemitism is manifesting itself in the wake of the Hamas attacks is pretty ****ing alarming.

I'm pretty close to leaving tbh. The Israel-Gaza Conflict (and the rhetoric that has stemmed from it) has been ugly ugly ugly, and it no doubt has been exacerbated by the platform. But along those lines, I've had the "For You" page open by default lately (despite settings for "Following" to be a default for my account) and have noticed that it is tailored to be ugly and garner negative engagement. In a manipulative way. The platform has always been a ****show since I've been using it, but some of the changes (pushing "For You"; taking out headlines from news stories) make it far less useful.

Amazing how it's never time to talk about doing anything...
