  1. The other side of the coin is that there is plenty of the same bilge (both in Washington and on corners of the internet) aimed at blue counties and blue constituencies. Nothing makes me roll my eyes harder than that Yale educated blowhard, Sen. Josh Hawley of Missouri, talk about how state school students from Middle America (like myself) are everything that's wrong with America. You literally go to a state school, get a STEM education and become a tax paying American, only to have pricks like him or Ted Cruz (Harvard) or Tom Cotton (also Harvard) talk about how terrible you are. No wonder the GOP struggles with younger college educated voters lol. Nonetheless, that is no better, yet the same folks who (justifiably imo) don't appreciate stereotypes about red places? Sure as ****, they don't have any issues rolling past those comments either. I get it, I don't like the stereotypes either. But it'd be nice if the people who complained the loudest would recognize the symmetry and not just make it out to be the provenance of just one side.
  2. Very cool... I grew up in the same kind of place and wouldn't trade the experience for the world. I'd even move back, frankly, if a world existed where I could have my job in that kinda place. I just think, specific to the discussion about Elko, it can be a little more nuanced than characterizing the reality of the situation as "sneering at rednecks" or some ****.
  3. Cosign, and would just add that the crowds tend not to swim against the tide at these meetings. Even aside from council meetings, having family who live in a nearby county that gave Trump over 75% of the vote in '16 and '20 who dont agree with the prevailing view, there is a tendency to just avoid politics altogether. At the end of the day, you have to get along with your neighbors. And swimming against the tide tends to hinder that effort.
  4. Of all the times for a Tigers beat writer to be critical of the team... This ain't it
  5. I have... have even been involved in a couple of public meetings in my career. In a county like Elko County, with such a large spread between the two parties and where out-party types are "go along, get along" out of necessity, there is close to zero doubt in my mind that a board meeting is probably 90+% GOP voters. Which kinda brings us full circle... I understand your point, but the fact that it even made it onto the agenda is alarming, and the context, where it happened, matters if we are being honest about it. It doesn't mean there aren't cooler heads among the population, but it suggests that the more extreme elements of GOP support in this heavily GOP county would have liked to see this item come to pass.
  6. https://thenevadaindependent.com/article/elko-county-health-board-votes-against-ban-on-covid-19-and-flu-vaccines Found this interesting.... Sounds to me like the measure is probably more reflective of the beliefs of a majority of Elko County citizens than some are giving credit for.
  7. I fail to see how these assumptions are any more or less accurate than qualifying the politics of a place like Elko, NV when seeing a news story such as the one that broke there. We shall leave it at that, agree to disagree.
  8. I'm sure if this happened in Washtenaw County, you'd feel just as reserved in your judgments. Correct?
  9. My thing is that there are normal, sane Republicans out there. The fact that it was voted down at the city council kinda proves that right? But the existence of normal, sane Republicans doesn't negate the ridiculousness that in 2022, someone would get it onto the agenda. Nor does it mean that it getting onto the agenda in a city located in a county that voted overwhelmingly for Trump is a part of a vast left-wing conspiracy either.
  10. Your point being, what, exactly? I dont cosign on some of the other opinions expressed in the thread by others, but I also think, given the political bent of Elko, it's kinda BS to assign blame to left-wingers for an item that showed up on the City Council agenda there. Just dealing in the facts, it's not a judgment on values, it's that the reality is the "both sides" framing logically doesn't work here.
  11. Not sure why you feel that way about red counties... kinda arrogant and elitist if you ask me.
  12. More of this in the Democratic Party. And in Congress.
  13. Elko County gave Trump 76% of the vote in 2020 and Adam Laxalt 76% in the 2022 Senate Race. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out the cut of the jib of the type of person who would get that onto the agenda in that particular place. (Guessing they arent far left wackos)
  14. In Randy Smith's defense, one of his 1st Round picks was Jeff Weaver, who turned in an average career as a big leaguer. The rest of them were pretty ugly results wise... just seeing names like Matt Anderson and Nate Conejo causes my gag reflex to engage
  15. This is true, but it stands to reason that GM's are (at least to a degree) also responsible for the decisions that those under them make in their respective roles.
  16. A sign that I watch too many cooking shows: I hate that "dog reduction" makes me think of The Great British Baking Show lol
  17. The fact that Avila didn't completely **** up in at least one of his Top 5 draft picks (gonna go out on a limb and suggest Riley Greene will be a very good ML player) and the fact that he has occasionally blind squirreled his way into decent selections a couple of times (ie. Skubal) gives Randy the edge... Smith was somehow worse and almost never found any useful talent during his tenure.
  18. I can see how it looked fine on paper, but Randy Smith was one of the worst GM's in franchise history. (And yes, worse than even Avila imo) Other factors could have changed, but it wouldn't have changed how barren the talent pipeline was or the absolutely abysmal drafting that took place on his watch.
  19. Yeah, I do remember the reporting about Denise I at the time as well. Was downright Dallas-esque lol The winning post-2006 papers over a lot, because the Tigers Organization was pretty freaking dysfunctional at times prior to 2006. Arguably more dysfunctional than they are now.
  20. People mostly remember the later years with Pizza Sr. chasing the ring like Ahab going after the Whale, but the full picture is just more complicated. I went to way too many games in the early 2000s to forget... went to way more than I can even do now because of geography. This situation they find themselves in today really isn't much different and, if anything, they may even be in slightly better shape today than what DD inherited when he came aboard. My hope is that Harris fills that DD role in this generation. And based on the moves he's made and the clear philosophy one can see in the moves, I am encouraged with what we have seen.
  21. Yeah, this is the issue... the mainstream or even organs of GOP thought can talk about moving on all they want, but it all comes down to the primary voters and what they want. Even in a H2H match-up, I don't know if Ronny wins enough primaries against Trump, I really don't.
  22. I mean, it's kinda just history repeating itself... as much as the Ol' Man gets lionized around here, the dark days of 2002-2003 happened on his watch... like with Al, he hung onto Randy Smith for far too long, and it took DD four years to fix the ditch that Randy Smith left the franchise in
  23. There's no point in relitigating it for the 80th time, but part of Scott Harris' job is making calculated risks and apparently he felt this one was worth making. We kinda just have to see how it all plays out, but seeing how obsessing over "old friends" is a pasttime for our fanbase, we will likely be getting regular updates about Jeimer every time he has a good game in 2023, no question
  24. When did the flu vaccine become controversial? Jesus
