  1. I just think Detroit sports fans tend to get hung up on old greats taking over the team. No doubt that is amplified by Yzerman, who achieved success in the front office elsewhere, coming home. Salvation for this team is going to come from finding the next Mike Elias. It's not going to come from waiting for a former Detroit great to get the job.
  2. I'm sure it happens in other fan bases, but this obsession with former greats taking over is dumb. The Tigers need someone from a different organization to instill new philosophies. They dont need the past.
  3. Avila didn't smile or look comfortable the entire time as well.
  4. It's a number retirement ceremony, but it's almost doubling as an examination of evidence of Lou's case as a HOF-er
  5. Don't know why the Tigers don't call up JK Simmons more often...
  6. If Tork comes back up and turns it around, 2019 and 2020 will end up being massive improvements over the early Avila years draft-wise Honestly might be some of the better evidence against drafting pitchers early, which has long been a discussion point on the board lol
  7. Tigers are #2 in waiver priority, so they would likely have the opportunity... He's had a bad year and Ks too much, but this team badly needs needs someone who can hit for power. Not just for the rest of this year but next year as well
  8. Normally not a "we need to claim this guy" kinda guy... But I'd take a flyer here
  9. With prospects in particular, I don't even mind the past couple of drafts on paper (although would have preferred they not draft Jobe), but I dont know how realistic it is to assume that anymore than 2-3 guys make it out of either of them under any circumstance. It's not even so much an indictment of the front office or the new player development folks and more of a realization that all of these guys, like Jung or Graham or Jobe or Madden, are still capable of flaming out as they move up the ladder. That happens even to good orgs, let alone this one where success has been elusive.
  10. Dems in... array?
  11. Overall, a pretty decent day for 2022 draft picks... all except Luke Gold got hits in their debuts I believe
  12. Brieske: 4.1 IP, 3H, 1R, 8K (!)
  13. All I'm gonna say is that if they manage to win this and Garcia ekes out another inning, I hope he’s not the guy they interview afterward. 6 G'd walks lol
  14. Bloop and a blast baybee!
  15. 47 pitches in two innings. Is that baaaad?
  16. You'll have to ask Miggy that question. Whether he comes back next year or not is kind of up to him.
  17. Brendon Davis can play the corners, that makes two. They are shy a starting CF. Ground softening for a Parker Meadows bump up?
  18. I'm in that boat too, but it was hard to ever believe that would be the case without the "Big Man" saying it himself. That changed yesterday... he came out and said it... in the grand scheme of things, as bad as the lineup is and the fact that Miguel still probably isn't the worst part of the lineup, it's a positive development in the grand scheme of things. Just as the Tigers need to close the book on the Avila era, they need to close the book on Miguel as well.
  19. Not an earth shattering signing, but Wilmer Flores' brother Wilmer Flores makes a lot of sense with where they are in terms of infield versatility and with as many question marks that they have at 1B / 3B.
  20. Agree on all points - I think he comes back and he players better. He did switch agents recently, but I suspect he's not opting out, he'd never get the salary he'll command next year. As I see it, of the regulars, they separate into three buckets: Coming back - Greene (CF), Baez (SS), Schoop (2B), Meadows (LF/RF/DH), Torkelson* (1B) On the bubble, bench players or gone - Candelario (3B), Haase (C), Baddoo/Reyes/Castro (LF/RF), Barnhart, (C) The second category (not all inclusive) is where they need to focus their attention most IMO. Particularly 3B and additional outfielders if Rogers comes back and looks halfway respectable.... What makes it difficult is that 3B is pretty lean this offseason and with OF in particular, they really need one that is a switch hitter or bats right given how lefty heavy they are (with Greene/Meadows being L/L guys). I don't know how his defense is, but someone like Mitch Haniger (if he comes back and performs after coming back off of injury) and Jurickson Profar come to mind there. I suspect that they end up tendering Candy in the end and, if they are active, they probably focus a lot on OF. But who knows.
  21. here come the post draft transactions
  22. The other problem is Jonathan Schoop - in all likelihood, he's accepting his player option and coming back next year. I doubt they are going to eat his salary under any circumstances.
  23. I don't know that this is the case really.... particularly if they work out some sort of salary deferment of buyout of Miggy.
