I imagine he’s just more likely to draw a walk/get on base…which is what we needed down 2 runs at that point.
As fun as it is to watch AJ mix and match the lineups and pinch hitters, any roster size more than this would be out of control.
Firstly, a lot of guys would be on a roster and get minimal playing time—if any at all. It’s already hard enough to be successful as a pinch hitter—imagine going 7 or 8 games on the bench in between at bats.
Likewise, teams would use a lot of those spots on pitchers—meaning the strategy of trying to get the other team to burn their left handers or specialist pitchers would be severely limited and would erase the advantage of having an Ibanez or JHM type.
Third, the Dodgers, Mets and Yankees would just have more roster spots to buy up every good free agent.
Lastly, teams can barely get 26 positive players onto a squad—would it really be necessary to have an extra 8-10 guys on the active roster if most of them are Kriedlers/Baddoos/Madris/Hicklens/Workmans?
