  1. Congressman.
  2. Cody seemed to think along the same lines on his podcast this week, but even if Rodriguez waived any part of his no-trade to leave town, I don’t know how any team is going to take a chance on a guy who bugged out on his team and went incommunicado for six weeks in the middle of the season.
  3. Maybe we can make something happen with Dave in Philly and send them proven closer Gregory Soto and cash in exchange for Simon Muzziotti and a pitching lottery ticket.
  4. How do you know Chicago is a uniquely dangerous city to live in when you've never lived here?
  5. I said exactly nothing about Trump or fascism in this sidebar, until this sentence. As for "projecting" ... I do not think it means what you think it means ...
  6. As long as you've brought this one up, you'll enjoy this: https://www.sportsbusinessjournal.com/Daily/Issues/2018/01/12/Marketing-and-Sponsorship/Cubs-Boeing.aspx
  7. I agree that it really doesn't mean as much as it should, although for a different reason: rather than becoming rote, it's become something akin to an American Idol spectacle, in which performers try to out-do every performance of it they've ever seen before, injecting every vocal flourish they've ever learned into it. It's seemingly no longer about solemn reverence for your country, or even the flag—it's about how entertaining the singer can make it, and how amped up they can get the crowd over it. This guy is a good example of what I mean. Get a load of how he hits "free" toward the end:
  8. It's a slap in the military's face to those people who believe it is the military that gives us our freedoms. I think it reflects in part an exercise in underdogging ("they hate us because we're patriots"), and in part fear and loathing of people they can't imagine even existing since the very idea of them is just so disgusting. The Anthem is a virtue signifier: express your love for it and you're a good patriot; express anything other than love for it and you obviously hate America. I don't see how your n-bomb analogy applies, but OK.
  9. It's an outrage the Democrats are so low as to create oil spills into real America. they would never do this to San Francisco or Chicago. They've already started murdering ordinary people, good people, God-fearing people, just because they're Republicans. Marjorie was right. God, she's so hot. I just wanna
  10. Not only would I be cool with it, I've advocated as much for decades, sometimes on this and the old forum. The one exception I might make is for international matches, such as Olympics and international cups.
  11. From the story: Griner said Monday that she believed “we should not play the national anthem during our season,” a 22-game schedule compressed because of the coronavirus pandemic. Like Colin Kaepernick and others in sports, she is clear that her message does not concern the military or the flag. It’s about police brutality and social injustice. “I don’t mean that in any disrespect to our country. My dad was in Vietnam and a law officer for 30 years,” she said. “I wanted to be a cop before basketball. I do have pride for my country.” Brianna Turner, Griner’s teammate, agreed and took her opposition a step further. “I personally don’t think it belongs in sports,” she said, adding that “it’s not played at Walmart, it’s not played when you go to Six Flags. Why is it played before sporting events?” I see nothing wrong with this, but then, I'm not a red hat.
  12. Numerous charming takes from the right wing.
  13. I still think he ends up in Asia at some point.
  14. That’s why she needs Joe Manchin to join her. They can hold either party hostage at will.
  15. That happened in Chicago when Chip Caray was run out of town for basically not being his grandpa.
  16. The deals given to Bogearts, Turner, et al might end up not unlike the Bobby Bonilla deal, in which they play maybe eight years, then agree to fade into the woodwork for the last three in return for a negotiated settlement stipulating payments into their old age. That way the player gets the full value of the contract with income security throughout the rest of their long life, while the team gets the dual advantage of a lower luxury tax hit while the player is playing, coupled with the ability to keep the settlement payments off the official payroll once he’s gone.
  17. If the idea is to fuck up the Senate and bank the loot from the highest bidder, it will work most effectively if Joe Manchin joins her and makes it 49-49-2.
  18. BTW, did I miss the memo that said Brittney Griner hates America?
  19. Yup. They sure could.
  20. How much you wanna bet this came out of IRA in St. Petersburg?
  21. But did they appeal to young people and bring new fans to the team? What did the consulting firm from Chicago conclude?
  22. Still pretty fun. I'd like to know the technicals behind putting this together.
  23. Ernie didn't start doing "looooong gone" until the 80s, I believe. I think "goodbye baseball" is one of those calls where you have to hear it for a few years to get used to it, and then to appreciate it. It's just that he had an impossible act to follow, it the phrase was never going to catch on here. Rick Rizzs has an outside shot at a Ford Frick award from the Hall of Fame.
  24. It may be someone other than Putin …
  25. He still uses it, and I think there might be a few others who ape him.
