Verlander doesn't seem like the one day contract kind of guy.

I agree.  If you want to honor a player who has retired, just have a day for him.  

The Tigers signed Al Cicotte to a six-day contract in 1977 long after he retired, so he could qualify for a pension.  He was in poor health and was having financial problems.  In that case, it was a nice gesture.

Skenes pitched 6 shutout innings today va LAD. His yearly era dropped sub 2. In 53 career starts his career era is sub 2, and his whip is sub 1. I don't recall any pitcher in my lifetime coming out of the gate so strong. Maybe Gooden, who was a star at age 19. Seaver was excellent right away. Clemens by year 3. Vida Blue had that incredible first full season. But imho it's between Skenes and Doc Gooden. I enjoy watching Skenes' starts every time.

Paul Skenes has nothing on Old Hoss Radbourn.  25 wins, 2.43 era in his rookie season.  His next 4 seasons were even better.

Skenes seems like he’s going to have a couple of 00 Pedro seasons, which seemed hard to envision anyone coming close to anytime soon.

On Saturday, Ballers manager Aaron Miles will cede his decision-making duties to an AI. It is believed to be the first time a professional sports team will be managed by an AI in a regular-season game.

The AI will determine most of the regular in-game decisions a typical manager would make. It isn’t choosing the starting pitcher since the Ballers are on a set rotation, but the AI will create the starting lineup, decide when pitchers need to be replaced and when to use pinch hitters, and position the infielders and outfielders. The Ballers will not be using the AI for base-running decisions, as it would be too difficult to relay in signs for a stolen base attempt or a runner attempting to score on a base hit in real time.

Will AI determine when the manager should go out to argue with an ump? How much dirt to kick on same? When to throw a brushback pitch? Call a pitchout (remember those?)?

I said in my lifetime. I'm aging, but not quite old enough to have seen Old Hoss.

That Dodgers game was something else.  One batter away from a no-hitter and they end up getting walked off. 🤣

The downside of watching the ending of the Dodgers game is that it got me thinking about how I've watched two Tigers pitchers lose a perfect game with two outs in the ninth.  😒

I have about 60 old Baseball Digest from the late 80s and early 90s and a few other sports magazines from that era.  Does anyone collect old magazines?  Would anyone like them?  I can meet up and give them to you.  I work on the west side of Lansing 2x a week and live about 40 minutes south along I-69.  (Bin not included from picture)

I read all the digests from the early 70s to mid 80s.  They were hokey by today's standards, but I loved them growing up.  I still have a few of them, but I'm not really a collector.

Some of them would have the stats of active players at the back.  A good pre-internet resource.
