It is easy to say in retrospect that he should have fired Lalonde sooner. Maybe he should have. I’m OK with him not making rash decisions.

Nobody is saying the Winga have an upper echelon roster. Is Yzerman responsible for the roster? Well, yes, within the constraints of a limited pool of talent in the franchise, a limited pool of FA talent, and a limited pool of funds.

Fans of every franchise want to be in the playoffs. The roster as is was good enough to have gotten in the past two seasons. They didn’t. (Maybe if he had kept Gostisbehere they would have, but maybe G wouldn’t have stayed at any price because he wanted to compete for a Cup.)

If they can’t get Danielson, ASP, MBN, and a goalie up and in the playoffs by the end of 2026-27, that will be the sign that it is time to move on from Yzerman.

The other part of the equation with Yzerman and when be critiquing him is the whole "Yeah, well, what moves would you have wanted him to make instead?" That is something that certainly should be taken into account and I am aware of. It is easy to arm chair GM and then criticize after the fact.

They probably should have tanked for another season after 2022 and continued the rebuild going into the 22-23 season instead of bringing in what Yzerman viewed as quality starters like Chiarot, Copp, and Perron. I think I was onboard with this idea at the time. Though I did like the Copp and Perron moves when they were made. even if the money was steep on Copp. I never liked the Chiarot signing and I don't know that any fans really did.

We all know we've had famously bad lottery luck, but there is no guarantee that would continue and you can't run a franchise acting as if it would. I don't think it would have been a bad thing to essentially continue the rebuild for one more season in 22-23. This would have given us get better lottery odds for a chance at one of Bedard, Carlsson, or Fantilli in the 2023 draft. I do think had we waited it out one more year we're likely in a better financial position without Chiarot and Copp eating up so much cap space. I do think our PK would be substantially worse without Copp and our defense marginally worse without Chiarot. That said, I would trade being worse in one of those two aspects if it meant we had a Bedard, Carlsson, or Fantilli to build around. Again though, no guarantee we would have gotten a top 3 pick.

Ras and Compher both backslide a bit last year...I would hope putting them with Copp on a 3rd line would maximize their output.  Don't think we'll find any takers for them and we have needs on the top six and on D that have to be addressed first.

At this point...I would take the 23/24 Ras who scored 13 goals and was a plus 8 on the season.  Disappointing output from a 1st rd pick...but...oh well.

i dont see why anyone wants rasmussen around.  he's been awful since he got hurt.  he's the definition of a passenger on almost every night.  he should be a big, physical player forechecking the mess out of everyone and he just skates around doing very little... most of the time.

He has COMPLETELY...

Turned into Mantha.

he has the worst part of mantha (not trying hard or using his size effectively) without the exceptional skill that mantha would flash in stretches.

That would be 8 rookie adds in 2 or 3 years, plus Seider, which all things being equal, is good organizational performance. He just has to stop torpedoing himself with his in NHL moves.

So another goalie that will block Cossa from getting NHL ice team or no?

cossa's late season performances are blocking cossa getting nhl ice time.  not steve yzerman.

would you rather have jack campbell in grand rapids?  or this guy?

personally, i'd rather have augustine, but he decided to go back to msu.

Damn it Buch got traded to CSKA Moscow, looks like another season in the KHL.  Kaprizov and Panarin came over at age 23 so Buch is trending towards that.

welp....he'll be on a little bit better team.

Holl was a disaster. Everyone else they paid market price.

The real problem is that in the rebuild they traded away players, got a dozen second-round picks in three drafts, and got one NHL player out of it. Where is the development?

amen, brother.

the only non-drafted player who has given value to the team over his contract last year is patrick kane.  a guy who landed on their doorstep because no one else wanted him, not because the wings unearthed him.

shayne gothisebere and jake walman might have been nice and better than justin holl and eric gustaffson.  just sayin.

and that's not a matter of "players wont sign with us" because you had them under contract and didnt re-sign them/gave them away.

Oddly enough the Wings power play got better last season without Gostisbehere or Walman and that's pretty much why you would want them on the team. Plus I doubt he signs the deal he did in Carolina with Detroit.

To anyone complaining about signing more goalies, look at Edmonton right now.  They have all the talent in the world but are about to lose the Cup because they don't have a good goalie on the roster.
