But it's interesting to see the officials scorers logic, or lack of.

Officially, the official score can give the win to which ever reliever they feel pitched the best. It rarely happens that way,   but that is the rule. In this case, it makes much more sense to give the win to Smith who pitched the best amongst the relievers, instead of Hurter, who would have usually been the choice.  Then Smith would have earned a save, because he pitched at least 3 innings in relief and finished the game, no matter the score.

I think when assigning the winner is sort of subjective one of the criteria is the best pitching performance by a relief pitcher, and apparently the scorer thought Smith was the one that supplied that criteria.

The Tigers now have the best run differential in baseball, at +108. The Cubs are +107, the Yankees are +105. Jays are only +4 but 9 games over .500.  The other four AL Central teams are -16 or worse.

I've never tracked that before this year but we are running out of things that the Tigers are competing for this year.

Didn't realize that the winning pitcher could not qualify for the save too even though he earned it.  In the normal course of events, i.e being the pitcher of record when the final lead was won, that makes perfect sense.  You can't do both.  But in this unique situation where the scorer gets to assign the win, it seems he should be able to earn the save too.  Maybe there is a rule aligned with the 3 inning save rule that states the winner can't get the save.

Owens had an interesting line today.  1 IP 2 hits 3 BB and only 1 ER.

I would also assume that a reliever that came into the game, but didn’t make it past the 5th inning, might be ineligible?

That is not true. Any reliever that comes in at any time with the lead, as long as their team maintains the lead until the end of the game, is eligible for the win. It is only the starter who has to go. 5 innings to get the win.

In theory, you could have a 9 inning save. Say visiting team scores 6 run in the first inning like the tigers did in game 1 today. The starting pitcher in the bottom of the first gets hurt before recording an out.  A reliever comes in, he is now the pitcher of record. He gives up 3 runs and also does not record an out. Another reliever comes in and gets 3 outs without giving up anymore runs. That same reliever (the third pitcher) pitches the rest of the game, 9 complete innings, and the score stays the same, 6-3.  The official scorer can give the win to the second or third pitcher, his discreation. If he gives it to the second pitcher, then the third pitcher gets the save for going 3+ innings and finishing the game.

If he was the pitcher who pitched most effectively, he's eligible. It's all up to an official scorer. The same idiot who rules it a hit when a defender drops an easy pop-up. 😅
