It seems one of the new things here in Cornhole is trivia. Couple of different flavors, one in the middle of the town that has now grown to ballroom size with over a hundred people doing general style, or in my case, a ****hole bar doing music trivia.

You get a team (no money involved) and each team puts an app on their phone. You create a team name and get hooked up with the trivia guy who keeps score. You get points for a correct answer, and more points for being the fastest. The trivia guy sits somewhere with a mic and speaker. He plays a song over his speaker and through the app you play the game. It loads a full screen of the alphabet.

This competition was based on 70s, 80s, 90s music.  He would play 15 seconds of a song, and as soon as you know who the artist is, you hit the letter of the first letter of the name of the band. After the 15 seconds, he would tell how many teams got it right, who the band was, and who was the fastest. He did around 25 songs, took a ten minute break (bathroom, cig, joint :-)), then did another session, this time one hit wonders. Another break, then you had to do the first letter of the name of the song. That was tough. Then one more for band name. Probably total close to 80 songs over the course of the night. Started at 6:30, done by 8:30.

They had around 40 people, and 10 teams or so teams. I sat with a couple musician buddies of mine, who both played in bands over the years. We got smoked. It's amazing how fast some of these people were. No matter, it was a ball. I haven't had that much fun since the hogs ate my brother.

I love trivia nights. I think I might have gotten a group together to start doing trivia on a monthly or so basis. Seven of us aged 60-75. We called ourselves the “Superannuated Friends”. (My teammates are so old and/or such nerdballs that they didn’t know the cartoon the name was based on.) We finished middle of the pack among fifteen teams where a fair number of questions were about 90s movies and 2000s music. I was pretty impressed. I hope we can keep this up for a while.

We do trivia night as a family when we can (along with the Casimir clan, if possible). When we are all together, we are a formidable force. Having college-age people along with us olds really covers the bases for the various categories. It still usually comes down to getting the last question right (where you wager a fair number of the accumulated points), but we've won a fair number of times.

Back when Trivia Pursuit was first popular my wife and I were practically banned from family play. She being a history major and reporter/manager in radio news. Me as a radio jock and into pop culture at the time.

Now, not so much. I'm sure my 14 year old grandson could beat us.

Whenever I walk a trail and I start seeing a great lake, especially if it is Lake Superior. Really doesn't matter what season it is.

Here's one I took during a "what the heck let's go" May 15 to 17 trip to the Keweenaw Peninsula earlier this year. This is a photo in Copper Harbor at the peninsula point of Hunter's Point Trail. Just laid on the lava rock for 30 minutes listening to the slight waves and the animals that hit the area. The second was in Grand Marais I think March 2025. There was a small strip of shore line that was completely dry between Lake Superior's completely calm water and the ice shelf to the right of me. This wasn't the best photo my wife got of me, but it's the one I could find. I laid there in the sun (it was pretty warm and I did get a bit burned) for about 25 minutes.

We will be making our next week-long trip to Houghton and the KP in less than two weeks. Bugs or not, we'll be there. It's our annual UP trip. And I typically get up there once a month even if it is just for a day or a leave one day and come back the next trip.

Being near Lake Superior is so calming and good for your mental mindset.
