From a 4th round pick to a 4th round pick. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Started from the bottom....and we're still at the bottom!

Probably a long shot that he was ever going to be impactful in the NHL with his inability to stay healthy but I wouldn't have mind seeing what he could do on the wing next season.  He needed to clear waivers so I guess they figured they might as well get something for him.

Cossa to Utah for pick 23,!!

From a first round pick to a first round pick. A few slots later than he was picked but not bad. Sorry he didn’t get more than a relief effort in Detroit.

good value for cossa.

drafted a michigan man.  probably a middle six winger, but he's been playing center lately so maybe he sticks there?

smallish forward, RH shot. Lucas Raymond V2 wannabe.

Why am I getting a gnawing premonition Larkin is going to be a Wing when camp opens.

I am very sad I really wanted Cossa to workout in Detroit. He is such a fun goalie to watch, shame how it played out purely for selfish reasons.

Never heard of whoever this is they drafted!  Seems like he’s the opposite of the type they usually draft?

never draft a goalie in the first round.

Sounds like a typical Wings forward, too small to stand to playoff level pressure without bigger linemates, which he probably isn't going to have.

Good value for Cossa given where he is today, I had thought they might get only a 2nd. But to lose 5 years and drop 8 spots in the draft is a big blow to the rebuild.

how does that mantha trade look now?

not so good.

whenever you can pull a late forst round pick for your #3 goalie prospect, you should do it.

now watch cossa go turn into markstrom, a big late bloomer.

in a system loaded with goalies and lacking in centers they took a goalie in the third round.  smh.

You have to get centers much earlier than that. I found it interesting that the Wings took a lot of players they don't have to sign right away. They can take their time.

Is trading your first round picks for first round picks 5 years later the best way to ensure you are perpetually rebuilding?

Not necessarily...in this instance they had a guy in Cossa that they weren't ready to commit an NHL roster spot to and they have three other goalies in the system (Postava, Guimond and Augustine) who look like NHL prospects.  They don't have F's with a lot of offensive upside so moving Cossa for a pick to get a F like Hurlbert that has that kind of offensive potential is a good deal.

its a good deal in the now because cossa had lost most of his value, but in the long term its a terrible deal.

its the equivalent of trading larkin for a first round pick in 2031.  that's what they did with cossa.  they traded mantha and got the caps first rounder which they used to move up for cossa....who they just dumped 5 years later for a later first round pick.  hurlbert may never pan out, and he's certainly not going to be here for at least two more years.

is it good to move a diminshed asset for a first rounder?  yes.

is it bad that your top 15 pick from five years ago and "goalie of the future" played 14 nhl minutes for you in his whole career and had to be traded?  also yes.

Name a team who doesn't miss on a 1st rd pick...it's  not a "terrible deal" to trade an asset from a position of strngth to fortify a position of need.  Cossa didn't progress as they had hoped and was no longer going to be waiver exempt..moving on from him was the sensible move...certainly more sensible than trying to pass him through waivers later or worse, taking uo a roster spot in Detroit to avoid putting him through waivers.

Hurlbert's timeline is largely irrelevant in the discussion.

The Larkin comparison is silly
