This is the most wide open playoff year we’ve had in maybe 2 decades.    There is no favorite in either conference.

And the Rams just lost to the Falcons. So of course this is the year we don't make it in.

I am choosing to believe that the Cowboys read the headline wrong and acted rashly.

Coach Hot Seat Rankings

GOOD AS GONE

1. Jonathan Gannon - Cardinals.   Full rebuild coming here.  Maybe the Lions can find an O-Lineman for a mid-round draft pick.   Kyler Murray will be leaving too (my guess would be for Minnesota).  We could see a similar Stafford for Goff type deal with JJ going to the desert with a few draft picks.

2. Raheem Morris, Falcons.   They had a nice swansong for him against the Rams, but this dude's been done since midseason and Arthur Blank was just being patient.

3. Pete Carroll, Raiders.   Remember when Al Davis was the maverick who spit in the face of the NFL and won (for awhile).  Well, his son is the opposite.  Horrible owner.  How many coaches in how many years?   Pete should have walked into the sunset after Seattle.   What a story if Gruden came back.  It's the Raiders - Never Say Never.

4. Kevin Stefanski, Browns.   I don't think it's his fault that the Browns are a mess.  It's still because of Deshaun Watson. And they still have to pay him next year.   I don't think the greatest coaches of All-Time could have done anything with this mess.

HANGING BY A THREAD

5. Zac Taylor, Bengals.    The team is too dependent on Joe Burrow. Is it Tay-Tay's fault they struggle?  Would be a great choice for Lions OC

6. Todd Bowles, Buccaneers.   Injuries played a huge part in the Bucs' collapse.   I think he gets one more shot

7.  Mike McDaniel, Dolphins.   The Pats leapfrogged them big time.   I expect the Jets, with a better QB, to close the gap next year.  They continued playing hard for him.  Tua is a bust with good numbers, but not a real winner.   Goff might get that rep pretty soon too.

8.  Mike Tomlin, Steelers.   It's just stale.  But Pittsburgh does not change coaches often and haven't fired one since 1968 and have only had 3 Head Coaches since then.   That's amazing.

9. Shane Steichen, Colts.   The collapse was brutal.  It was a great story, they were the Belle of the Ball until about week 10 - from 8-2 to 8-8 and no playoffs.  I think he gets another shot.

BUTTS GETTING WARM

10. Dan Quinn, Commanders.  We don't know much about the new owner and his patience, but what a drop off.

11. Aaron Glenn.  I don't think the Jets will dust him after 1 year.   He doesn't deserve that.  But that owner is an idiot

12. Matt LaFleur.   Pack fans might be sick of just making the playoffs, eh?

It hasn't been fully investigated yet.   They shouldn't take action against him.  But if it turns out to be true, he should be gone immediately.

His lawyer want the courts to keep it quiet...yeah, OK.

How can Tampa fans think they have any chance with Mayfield under center? He's proven, over and over, he's not capable of beating quality teams the necessary 3 or 4 games. It's like "We've seen that movie before." Yeah, several times.

Are people serious about Campbell’s seat best any bit warm?

absolutely idiotic.       it was a bad year.   that went right last year went wrong this year.   and that is often the case in NFL.

The Niners didn't fire Shanahan and I think they may get back to the Super Bowl this coming season and they were 6-11 last year.

Campbell can't magically make injuries better and i think Ragnow blindsided them with his timing a bit.    His mistake was the OC hire.    I know the D was bad at the end, but we were putting 5th string guys out in the backfield and our D-Line was very disappointing.   These are all quickly-fixable things.

An 8-9 team going to the playoffs and HOSTING a game.     Pure garbage.

If New Orleans wins, Tampa wins the division and is the #4 seed. If Atlanta wins, Carolina wins the division and is the #4 seed. And yes, both teams are 8-9. There are 2 things I want the NFL to change...allowing these weak teams into the playoffs and a new way to enforce the play clock. Teams taking extra time to snap the ball shouldn't be allowed. Maybe this system was OK in the 50's but there are many ways they could upgrade this system. A buzzer in the refs ear would be a simple fix. I have no idea how they can stop these weak teams from making the playoffs.

Just rank them by conference.  Still have divisions, but the playoff rankings are by conference.  Make a rule.  Even if you win a division, you don't make the playoffs with a losing record,  You go 9-8 and you're in, you go 8-9 and sorry, that's on you, see you next year.     Or use the Lions idea.  Congratulations Panthers/Buccs, you are the 7th seed, good luck in Seattle.

I've said it for years that winning your division should have no bearing on whether you make the playoffs. The top 7 teams in each conference should get into the playoffs and should be seeded by their records. It's a joke that the NFC South gets a team in with a losing record, meanwhile a team with a winning record will potentially be kept out and that team could be us. People defend this format too for whatever reason.

Then what's the point of divisions? You can't have the opponents for more than 1/3 of your games be decided by which division you're in if winning that division means nothing. I'd be fine with either a) winning the division means a playoff spot but you're seeded based on record; or b) moving to a 16-team conference, get rid of home and away pairings against one opponent in the same season, and take the conference's top 7 teams for the playoffs.

It's to maintain fan interest. Artificial playoff races by having too many divisions. Your proposal would only work if they were to eliminate divisions and only have two huge groups of teams, the AFC and the NFC. And I agree with your idea, but keeping these divisions in place wouldn't work. There would be fans screaming if their team won a division but didn’t get into the playoffs. Eliminate the divisions and the top 7 teams in each conference make the playoffs...

Keep the division illusion alive by having the home/home vs the same teams every year.     Every year Bears, Packers, Vikings twice.    Everyone else is on a rotation.

18 games (because we all know that's coming)

6 vs. those Regional Rivalries with a home & home

(then based on a rotation........)

6 vs. others in your conference

6 vs. the other conference.

With these games, you make sure that every year you play a certain number of games West Of The Rockies, so everyone has to do the dreaded West-Coast road trip at least once or twice a year.
