McGonigle has an 80 hit.

Iorg was a 20 hit. Tooled up across the board except for the most important one.

I thought he had a 70 hit tool? Did they upgrade him or did I misread that somewhere?

I don't know who "they" is, but in the myriad national podcasts/ outlets I read, some behind paywalls, I have heard 80 hit thrown around about him but don't remember by whom.

We did get McGonigle with $ saved from taking Clark at below slot instead of Langford.

I was going to mention this.   Even if Clark never gets a hit in the majors we owe getting McGonigle to Max taking less $$.

Clark was a high pick, #4 overall, after the 2022 season? Rainer was 11th overall after 2023. McGonigle was 37th, meaning every other team had at least one shot at him.

For context, Tork was #1 overall, Casey was #1 overall, and Riley was #5 overall.

You can make the argument McGonigle, or at least the pick he was drafted with, was a consequence of the team's downturn. It was a competitive balance selection, which you get if you are revenue sharing recipient. The first several years of this system (after the first), the Tigers were revenue sharing payees. That started changing in 2019 when the revenue sharing formula caught up to their dropoff. I honestly have no idea if things will turn back in the coming years taking that pick away or not.

Anyways, the Tigers' competitive balance selections.

2013 (2nd round): Traded in the Infante/Sanchez/Turner trade. Received competitive balance 1st round pick (Corey Knebel)

2020 (2nd round): Danny Cabrera

2021 (1st round): Ty Madden

2022 (2nd Round): Traded with Isaac Paredes for Austin Meadows

2023 (1st round): Kevin McGonigle

2024 (2nd Round): Ethan Schiefelbein

2025 (1st round): Michael Oliveto

We may have gotten the comp sandwich pick as a consequence of our not-so-goodness, but point is, all 29 other teams had a crack at Kevin, so they could have seen the exact thing we saw.

I would love to know what the thinking inside the office was when it came to this pick. Did they have their eye on Kevin the whole time and calculated that everyone else would pass on him because of his presumed price?

Or they had extra bonus money to offer him, just from having the high bonus pool and extra 5% overage, that they were able to give him another that teams at the some teams at the back end of the first round weren't able to match without blowing up picks later on.

McGonigle also had a commit to Auburn, and his number was in the high 2 million.

I have heard 70 and 80.  80 is rarely every even thrown around, so just the mention is significant.

Awesome deal for the Tigers.  I have more confidence in McGonigle continuing his success that any young Tiger in a really long time.  He's got great talent and the baseball smarts to know how to use it.

Good deal for McGonigle, too, because he will still be reasonably young when this deal ends.

so on the topic of KM and in a nod to the discussion up thread about gloves  - I've noted that KM does use a very small SS and an open pocket 3b glove that looks somewhat but maybe not max length. And I would just note that he did have trouble with the transfer from the 3b mitt in the 1st inning yesterday. The runner was erased on a DP so no harm, no foul, but just a point that there is no free-lunch, each glove is a trade off for what you want to do most at that position.

I love this organization!

Tarik Skubal: ball’s in your court. How bad do you want to be part of this?

I don't think the Tigers have any offer for him.

Ok, thanks.

But do you think if he came and said I'll sign for 300 million the Tigers be like 'sorry we dont have an offer, come back some other day?"

If Skubal signs for $300MM then it's going to be for five years, not nine. Which is fine with me.

No glove would have helped the Royals 3B with Dingler's hit in the 8th.
