So the Lakers now have $50ish million in cap space.  Lets see if they make a run at Duren.

if the lakers are building around luka like the mavs did, does duren for $50 make a lot of sense?  those mavs team had 3&d wingers and defensive centers.

you can find a pick and roll center who actually plays defense for a lot less than whar duren is going to make.

Makes a little sense on offense since Luka loves a lob catching center.  But you're right, on defense it's a big nope.

They would probably be better off making a stupid offer for Peyton Watson, something around $30 million and then picking up Mitchell Robinson on the cheap.

The new CBA rules were designed to keep stars from chasing rings, and nowhere has that hit harder than LA. The Lakers having a third of the cap in free space 5-10 years ago would have seen them go on a shopping spree. Now, with free agent classes this thin, they might have a hard time even spending $50 million.  They will obviously spend it, but they won't get the same ROI as in the past.

Am I reading that correctly?  ESPN is showing one Detroit game?

Uh, that's ESPN -  U.  Not sure how the U compares to the Ocho.

He shot 33% and 30% from three the past two years.  I don't know if that qualifies as a sharpshooter.

Not worried about his shooting. He needs to prove he can stay healthy and available.

Just was going to ask....who do we want?

Jalen Duren set to meet with Sacramento

One of the top free agents (restricted) on the board is set to meet with the Sacramento Kings at the start of free agency, starting on Tuesday, Chris Haynes reported. Jalen Duren is meeting with Sacramento with the intentions of "structuring a sign-and-trade out of Detroit.

is there any way to get duren to sacramento, lauri to detroit, and picks to utah?

Why Markkanen?  Availability is an ability he ain’t got.

CBA stuff incoming.

Assume a salary cap of $165 million.  For trade purposes, Duren's first year of salary is the number we use.  A max deal from Sacramento would put that number at $41.25 million.

In a sign and trade, Duren will qualify as a base year compensation player.  That means on Sacramento's side of the deal, his salary coming in is $41.25 million.  For Detroit, it only counts as 50% of that.  So $20.625 million.  So Detroit can only take back guys making that much, sort of.

Salary matching rules say Detroit can take back $7.5 million more than the outgoing salary.  So that would mean Detroit can take back ($20.625 + 7.5 million) for a total of $28.125 million.

So basically Detroit can take back any player making up to $28.125 million in the new season.  Or any combination of players whose total salaries equal that or less.

Now there are ways they could get a more expensive player.  But it involves bringing in a third team and that gets much more complicated and I'm not going to try and figure that all out.  Just know it is a possibility.

My guess would be Keegan Murray.

I thought he’d be off limits, but that’s who I would want.  Sabonis would be fine, I figured he’d be the best available player to attain and would replace Duren in the pivot.  I didn’t bother looking at salaries, but where there’s a will, there’s a way.  Heck, if it’s Murray and things, do it and find another tall dude.  Maybe it becomes more than the Pistons and Kings and a 3rd team is where the Pistons get another C.

That would be much more concerning than any meeting with Sacramento.  The Kings have no cap space.  Their only move is a sign and trade.  The Lakers will have the cap space (Assuming Lebron leaves for GSW) to sign Duren to an offer sheet.  At that point Detroit has to decide if they can stomach the contract or not.
