Dark times indeed

The funny thing for me is that I've probably talked myself out of Petterson at this point, we can't get on the same page b

its gotten to the point where i am now really wondering where the elite skill is going to come from.  he refuses to rebuild.  he refuses to trade for futures.  he refuses to pay top dollar for skill players.

if the only way we get top players is by picking in the top 6 or having skill guys demand a trade to detroit, we're **** out of luck.  the salary cap has gone up so much that almost all the top free agents re-sign before they hit the market.

danielson is no longer profiling as a 1c.  neither is kasper.  they have no other centers in the pipeline.  where is the elite skill coming from?

i cant atand pettersson but he does have elite skill in that soft body somewhere.  they need it.  unfortunately, even with his massive salary, he will have other suitors because trade is the only way you can acquire a player anymore.

its reached that point of desperation.

No need to eb desperate though, that's the thing. If our GM would just recognize the rebuild isn't working and hit the reset button we could be in a better direction.

yeah, but he doesnt.  he's lost in the same world as some posters here: that finishing with more points than last year and being in first place for a while means theyre SO CLOSE to making it.

the underlying stats show that's not true.

who's your first line next year right now.  debrincat-larkin-raymond?  youre leaning into small and skill.

then who is your second line?  arvidsson-copp-kane?  more small, less speed, more age.

who is your third line?  mbn-kasper-finnie?  fourth line of ras-compher-kolesar?

where do the goals come from 5×5?  it will be the same as last year, when the other team puts pressure on you, you'll crumble because youre small and your 2nd and 3rd pair defense are bad.

rinse-repeat.

to rebuild, they needed either kasper or danielson to be a good player by now.  and it didnt work.  finnie is a nice story, but 3rd line winger isnt what this team needs.  it needs a skilled star.  it doesnt have it and yzerman has shown he cant draft it and wont pay it.

done.  time to move on.

Being unfair on Kasper and Danielson both...Kasper had an off year and was hurt, but he was one of our best forwards the year before.  Danielson hasn't really gotten a shot...lost too much time to injury this year.

Having said all that..my preference would be to keep all the young guys and move Larkin, Debrincat and Faulk and whatever else for futures and hope enough of the young talent we have in the system and that we gain via the draft matures quickly enough to not waste Seider and Raymond's prime years.

It looks like Quinn Hughes and Minnie are about to agree on a 17-18 million a year extension. With Kaprizov locked in at 17 million...that's a lot of cap for twio guys.  Reminds me of the failed Suter/Parise signings a decade or so ago

it would not shock me if yzerman turned down the quinn hughes deal not because they asked for edvinsson, but that he didnt want to pay hughes $18m per year that he was told was going to be the cost of an extension.

in fairness to steve, no team has ever won a cup with a player making anywhere close to that amount.  however, stevie - and the rest of the league - are going to have to get used to those numbers.  its a new world.  adapt or die.

the cap is up by about 25% since Larkin signed his deal. But Larkin isn't in the very top echelon. With a 20 man roster I would think 10-15% for a max contract is sustainable, so $18M does seem a bit too much, but $15M for 90 pt center or a  27min top D man isn't that bad if you assume the cap goes up another 20% over the life of the deal. If that turns out to be a good assumption....

not trading larkin for robertson because you dont want to pay him $15m is the final straw for me.

WHAT ELSE CAN YOU GET IF YOU DONT WANT FUTURES?

Trading a center for a center makes no sense for anyone else, unless it’s a prospect lottery ticket. I don’t want another prospect we leave in GR for 3 more seasons until they give up.

Get your goal scorer for Larkin then trade someone else for a center if you are so sure that getting your first legit goalscorer in a very long time won’t result in more wins. I don’t want to trade Edvinsson, but trade him for a center if that’s what it takes to start being considered by good players.

What we are doing isn’t working. If Robertson’s contract results in us not having money to sign veterans with nothing left, then even better. I’d rather lose with more youth than lose with cooked free agents.

Why are a number of posters on Twitter saying this is Dylan Larkin? I'm almost positive that's not him.

Yes, he was seated in that area with George Kittle, Filip Forsberg, Trevor Zegras and Cole Caulfield, but the guy in this picture below (Larkin) isn't the same guy in this above picture, is it?

From the second picture I’m pretty sure it is.

Oh I’m sure the 2nd picture is Larkin. He was definitely there. I just didn’t think the guy in the top pic is the same guy.

Guessing he signs a long term extension in Dallas as soon as he's eligible and it is already basically agreed upon. Seguin's deal is over and it doesn't seem like Robertson wants to leave.  It will be interesting to see how the team is constructed since they'll have a ton of roster spots open next offseason.
