Now JD is openly warming to Nixon.  Is this the first primary election of 2028: who is more like Richard Nixon?

Rubio has the look for sure.  That 5pm stubble indicates that he would grow a beard that would put Dusty Gibbons or Fidel Castro to shame.

JD has all the nervous energy of a guy whose one step in front of the creditors/kidnappers/blackmailers at all times.

Can you imagine how much different this country would be were Nixon prosecuted?

The reaction might have been much stronger.  What we got was Reagan but what we might have gotten might have been President Lyndon Larouche.

Do you really believe the right-wing so-called "silent majority" would have rebelled at the ballot box and put that lunatic in the Oval Office? And after far right-wing elements in the Republican Party orchestrated his obtaining the party's nomination in 1976?

Not him specifically but someone worse than what we got.

Quote

DURING A LITTLE NOTICED FIRESIDE CHAT this week in Washington, D.C., Sen. Ruben Gallego (D-Ariz.) told a gathering of fellow lawmakers, beltway types, and activists a scary campfire story.

“If Marco Rubio is the nominee for president,” Gallego warned, “we are in trouble.”

Gallego wasn’t definitively declaring that Secretary of State Rubio would win the Latino vote if he mounts a presidential bid in 2028. He was arguing something more nuanced: that the bilingual Cuban-American would blunt the growing strength Democrats have been showing in states like Arizona, Nevada, Texas, and Florida with voters who have recoiled at Trump’s policies and priorities.

I guess I was thinking more in terms of disincentivizing presidential criminality and less in terms of fascist backlash.

You aren't wrong.  I was just thinking through possible reaction from the over-reactors.   We have this generation of RW lunacy because Bill Clinton got away with what he did.

Meaning Rubio will fail to turn out the Bubba Red Hat vote?

IMO Red Hatted Bubba would never vote for a Democrat. Even if JC came down on a cloud and told them to do it.

JD Vance is changing his name again?

Bubba Red Hat didn't vote until Trump.

I'm not going re-post the clicky baity stuff but Jon Ossof just made a strong move by making Overturning Citizens United a central pillar of his campaign.

it's about time the Dems got on this bandwagon in a more organized fashion. A real symptom  of why the Dems don't fair much better in party preference polls than the GOP.

I guarantee the majority of the people who disapprove of Democrats in those polls has no idea what Citizens United is.

Few have had this particular booger man explained to them.  Someone also made the point about the court ruling that allowed corporations to be citizens...name escapes me.   We need to reform all this stuff.  It will be very difficult without mobilization and organization.  The first step is to educate.

Political coverage in the US ends at 'Horserace". To actually explain an issue is taken as advocacy in today's 'immaculate conception' liberal but corporate vetted journalism circles.

Political media also like the money.  Longer, more ads...more cash.

exactly - which is why you will never see any for profit media out front on CU or any kind of public campaign finance reform.

This could end up being a real litmus test for Democrats and help highlight which of them are really beholden to the money.

Another related thing they will have to run against at some point is unlimited lobbying and the corporate authorship of congressional bills.

As an agency ad executive, I had a lot of experience planning around “politicals”, those couple of months preceding major elections during which ad rates are elevated due to FCC regulations that no advertiser is allowed to pay lower rates than political candidates. That made spot rates so high it was better to stop advertising altogether, or at least take a hiatus from broadcast.

But people are more receptive to your ads because they are sick of hearing about Senator Banjo SisterDater or his opponent the vile Susie Usedtoworkatamethlab.  They welcome hearing the guy in a lab coat tell us how Record Town CDs and vinyl can help fight gum disease.
