I don't see anything that says Mize won't, assuming the $ and years are the same.  I'm with Shelton, I have a hunch we end up resigning him.

Getting back to Valdez...when people were wondering if he would get a playoff start, at the time there were 5 pitchers getting better results than him. I don't care what he did in previous years, if he's not pitching effectively at playoff time, to the bullpen with him! I mean, if we're going to start pitchers who had previous playoff success? Uh...you also want JV to start? 😊😆

I think Mize is gone..Injury prone and will be actually expensive going forward.

Harris hadn't been shy about signing pitchers with injury problems. Also older than Casey.

Sure, but let's be real. Someone suffering debilitation and incapacitation, needing 24/7 care for years on end, would be forgiven for preferring the alternative. That's what the whole Kevorkian thing is all about.

At 74 with what one doctor defined as a life defining situation, I’m beginning to understand stand that.
The heat of the past couple of weeks has limited what physical things I used to be able to do. No more long strolls thru battlefields and such in 90 plus temps. On the other hand the brain is good except for remembering those little chores the wife assigned.

Other than starting to sound like my father and grandfather on a few things, life is good

I was just discussing walking Pickett's charge with my grandson this afternoon.   I told him he'd have to do it on his own or with his uncle there was no way I could make it now.   It's the one battlefield walk I'd recommend to anyone, it shows just how brave(crazy) those guys were in that war.

What is the date that you think the Tigers need to decide to be in or out on this season? I personally think they need to make that decision by July 27th which gives them a week to set up deals which means roughly 10 games prior to that date...

The 27th would be 5 games prior to the deadline. (Unless you're counting the game on the 27th then it's 6.)

Oddly enough, they have two off days scheduled on July 30th and August 3rd.

I think July 27th sounds about right to close in on all the phone calls...

But will it be to sell?

Will it be to buy?

Or will it be to both sell AND buy...? Just guessing here... but I think Harris should start here, and pivot in whichever direction, as needed.

I think Win-Losses over the next 11 games will be the most important factor:

If we go 4-7 or worse... indicates we're not playing well enough and probably sell.

If we go 7-4 or better... The Tigers are HOT so keep pushing, IMO.

The in-between is the gray area.

What is the record we need to see in the next 10 games to hold pat/be buyers and sellers to maintain payroll due to competitive balance tax? For me I think they need to go at least 7-3 to even think about adding and anything less than 5-5 should be trying to unload expiring contracts. In between those 2 I am probably still shopping Skubal and maybe Torres but holding onto the other assets and still try and win.

Oh...

PRIOR....

Nevermind.

Harris will sell high and buy low!!   Profit!!   Playoffs!!

Still should trade Skubal

Scenario: Tigers go on an historic heater right now and win 16 straight. Sweep the Angels, sweep the Cubs, sweep the Royals, sweep the Orioles, sweep the A’s. They are sitting at 60-52 and are hovering around first place.

Still trade Skubal?

I still would—but I’m building a three team deal that brings us back pitching help and a good offensive prospect.

I cannot imagine the nuclear level of blowback Scott Harris would have to withstand for trading his ace pitcher while his team is on a 16-game-winning streak and in first place in the Central. But mainly I just wanted to see how committed you were to getting rid of him.

Very.  To be fair, I love Skubal and do t want to “get rid of him”, I just want to capitalize on the opportunity I see with these circumstances.  I also don’t think signing him to a long deal is a good idea even if he’s very open to that.

I don’t think this team/org is too far away from running the division for most of the next decade, but we need the return a Skubal trade can get us to expedite it.  A RF and/or 1B upgrade, moving Clark to CF ahead of McGonigle in the lineup, and a rebuilt bullpen are the things holding us back.  I’m not especially worried about our starting pitching beyond actual depth—which a trade could also help address.  I think we re-sign Mize though.

The ways to get the pieces we need from places other than the draft are going to be significantly more challenging after this trade deadline for a variety of reasons.

Yeah, we could magically get hot and make the playoffs and win the World Series….but so could about 12 other teams.  I’d rather try to structure a team that doesn’t need to go on runs all the time to be relevant and have one that will be a staple of the post-season.

This is not enough to blow a playoff/ World Series shot this year.

There are more ways than one to skin a cat: Meaning, dumping Skubal is NOT the only way to add some pieces. I don't believe you are going to convince anyone in here otherwise. Draft. Trades. FA's. Waiver wire... Trading Skubal is NOT the only way to build this team.

Also, holding onto Skubal for this year's playoff run, and making a QO and receiving a 30/35-ish 2027 draft pick for when he walks... has a certain value.

Which means whatever package is offered for Skubal, has to beat that. Can anyone guarantee that we get that offer? What if offers are a little too subpar to equal to that (30-ish pick next year, plus a World Series attempt this year...?)

Are you certain we wouldn't end up with a JV package in return? Minor leaguers fail all the time, even highly rated ones, for all sorts of reasons (arm injuries, etc...).

And that is just...

Not.

Good.

Enough.

Ilitch. The fans. Harris. The team. Hinch. Myself. Boatloads of posters on this forum. Almost ALL of us would prefer making a run for the playoffs with Skubal. How do you overcome that? You have to override Harris/ Hinch/ Ilitch/ the TEAM's desire to make a run.

IMO... not. going. to. happen. (Unless they totally flop between now and the deadline...).

Just my 2 cents.

Why does trading Skubal have to equal us punting the season?  It’s not like we’ve been winning all the games he has been starting this year?  We still have to score runs for him and GASP hold the lead when we have it.

Theres a lot of things you can do with a Skubal trade to both help the team currently and in the future.

Just because I’m on team trade Skubal doesn’t mean I’m on team tank.  The value for Skubal can go through the roof if we play our cards right and play the right teams against each other.  The risk of getting prospects back in a trade is probably less than assuming we will get someone in the supplemental round of the draft.

OH, and PS: trading Skubal may not be defined by those guys as "PUNT"-ing the season... but at the very least, I believe Skubal would be described as "Our Best CHANCE".

That's a fine line of distinction... but I think it carries sledgehammer weight with Ilitch/ Hinch/ team... (just a guess... that Harris is a lot more cold-eyed than the rest and may be a little closer to your point of view than the others. But... he would NOT win that argument with the others... IMO).

I don't think the "fans" would be nearly as upset as some think.

IF we got a strong package for him I think Detroit sports fans are knowledgable enough to understand what happened and why.

They might not love it, but they would understand it.

Would Gleyber be in demand? He's been on the list twice already this year, for almost two whole months of the season, so even if he comes back this weekend,

With ASB over he played last night with the Flying Tigers. 0/3 but he did play the field.

Convince Harris/ Hinch/ Ilitch/ the team of that.

They could try to swing something like:

Dodgers get Skubal and Gleyber Torres and cash

Twins get: DePaula, River Ryan, Jordan Yost, Jace Jung

Tigers get: Joe Ryan and Mike Sirota

obviously that’s a super rough draft and probably not even—but that’s an example of how you can trade Skubal and still look to compete this year and in the future.

Tigers get a strong pitcher to keep them in the hunt who is controllable through next year (and gives them a piece to trade next deadline if it comes to that), and a young RH RF bat who can get on base at the top of the order with Clark and McGonigle.

Dodgers prevent Skubal from going to an opponent, give up prospects they don’t have room for, and get a 2B option that they kind of need.  We send them some money for salary relief.

Twins get an influx of good prospects to rebuild around since it looks like that’s where they’re going to have to head anyway and they probably won’t get that much of a return for just Ryan alone.
