A lot of that (McKinstry, Perez, Jones, Finnegan) could have been anticipated though, so, while I don't blame it all on Harris, he is not totally absolved.  Jansen and Anderson could also have been anticipated.

yeah  - Finnegan, JV, and Jansen were OOZ swings.

If there is one place to ding Harris, it's for not applying the resource spent on those three more effectively. For that kind of cash he could have done better.

Exactly. Look back on the trade in 5 years when Hope is an All Star. And Skubal is a 4.50 ERA pitcher making $40 million a year. 😄

Even if Hope and Ryan bust, I don’t think that means the trade was a failure.  Most prospects are flyers.  If you look at the history of prospects in trades, even top prospects, you usually don’t get what you were hoping for.  That’s just the nature of the beast.  You still have to pull the trigger and make the trade though.

The overwhelming consensus is we are deadline losers and I knew the narrative would be they pulled the trigger too soon on Skubal (a day early) but also too late (should have traded him before the season started). As Riley Greene says it is what it is. I'm rooting for the new Tigers. I wish them health and success. Screw the other teams.

The Athletic gave us an A, and the best grade out of all the Sellers...

Harris said that several times, this it was his view this team had fallen short, and if it hadn't they would have acted differently. He repeated it several times. We look at 2 1/2 back of the WC, but he's looking at where he wanted the team to have been, and by that standard they fell short enough that his decision was to sell.

Also... He looked at it and made his decision immediately after we lost Skubal's game.

Which is before we won 3 straight against the A's to put us 2.5 games back...

Minor issue/ point, but...

And when Baez's deal is done after next year, the Tigers will have some serious $$$ to go after players. They have an amazing core to build around and the franchise looks to be in good shape in the near and long term future..... The Tigers shed nearly 60 million next year alone and another 32 the year after that. We could have over $125 million to spend each year coming up in the very near future. I'll take that with our core. https://www.spotrac.com/mlb/detroit-tigers/yearly

Hopefully he spends a chunk of that money on building a competent bullpen.

I don't know where they get Jackson Wolf is one of the two of their best pitching prospects (Padres); but maybe they also think he can be fixed?

Link: MLB trade deadline grades for all 30 teams: Dodgers, Tigers, Red Sox earn high marks - The Athletic

Summary:

"Analysis: The Tigers did what they needed to do, which was to trade their two best starting pitchers (Skubal and Mize) knowing they were likely to lose them in free agency with minimal draft pick compensation in return. They did the best they could with the return.

I thought they got back exactly what they should have for both starters. From the return in the Skubal deal, I think Hope has a chance to be a 25 HR/25 SB player with All-Star potential and will fit in nicely with their young nucleus. Once healthy, Ryan can slide right into their rotation.

For Mize, they got two of the Padres’ best starting pitching prospects, which was also a solid return. The Tigers should be competitive next season and put themselves in a strong position for the long-term."

Exactly. And I trust Harris got better prospects than the 2 he could've drafted. He seems to be a really good judge of talent.

Just read Harris' comments on the official site and it makes sense that teams made their strongest offers right away for Skubal. No need to wait more hours because there was no where for them to pivot to. You want the best pitcher or you don't.

The consensus view from the more critical types of the deal is that the longer the Tigers had waited the higher a price they could have extracted. But absent any real competitive market or bidding war for Skubal's services, I don't really buy that it was inevitable that they price would have gone up.

Basically, the Dodgers made an acceptable offer and (it would appear) that others didn't. If you hold out or keep upping the 'ante, they absolutely would have risked the Dodgers taking their bat and ball and going somewhere else.

Either that or the players Harris received were ones he really wanted. At this point, I refuse to question his eye for talent.

And also Flaherty. He soiled the bed the first couple (few) months of the season. He wants to make snide remarks on Twitter but he should look in the mirror. Like Lee said, if we were in first place, we may not have traded Skubal and Mize. Jack, Vest and Jensen all helped derail this season. At least, IMO.

That Flaherty tweet really pissed me off as well.... setting aside the fact that his early season performance wasn't good, he literally owes the ring on his finger to a deadline deal and, like Skubal, he's a player who's really involved with the MLBPA. Nobody on this team should understand how this league works better than him.

The lack of self-awareness is breathtaking. I would get it the sentiment coming from Keider Montero, but it lands really poorly coming from him.

I wasn't overly wowed by the Skubal trade, but my gut instinct is that Detroit did pretty well on the Mize trade. I just saw a quick paragraph or two on Mayfield, but he sounds like a pretty solid prospect. I guess we'll see in a couple of years, but it sees the guy has some upside.

Am I off on that

Any of these media types who are criticizing the Tigers trades are NOT objective. They were all writing their articles declaring what players the Tigers would get. Instead of admitting they were wrong, they just say the Tigers fell short. Just because we didn't acquire the players they thought we should. They were 100% wrong. The same clowns who get the entire 1st round of the NFL drafts totally wrong. Click bait leading to more click bait. Parasites... <rant over>

I’m the opposite.  Really like the Skubal trade, but indifferent about the Mize deal.  Would have felt better if Mayfield had been a top 100 ranked prospect.  Did we just trade one of the best pitchers in the AL for Ben Jacobs?  His stats this season seem OK, but nothing to get excited about. I’ll trust the evaluators, though.

I think you both will be pleasantly surprised. I think Kash will be a prospect on the top 100 list next year somewhere in between 80-100. His value is right in line with a late 1st round comp pick. If he regains his velocity (I guess it's down 5mph from when he was drafted) then he could SKYROCKET up to the 50's. His changeup is amazing from all accounts. Very happy with this addition.

The MLB deadline didn't apply. The Tigers held an auction. All interested bidders received the opportunity to offer their best bids and up the ante if they chose. The Tigers chose the offer they liked the best.

I guess we'll find out about both in a few years. 🙂

Is there any difference between being ranked 80 or 125 (or wherever he's ranked now)?  He's still the same prospect.

People place way too much import on the rankings from media. Like the top 4 LA outfielders. Was Hope actually 4th? Depends on the timing and the evaluator.

Not really. Baseball America says that 50-150 there's little variance. I believe the other ones are 151-350, 351-500, 501-1000 are the tiers. But I'd have to look at them.

I imagine if you took the 10th and 90th percentile outcomes for each one, there would be a huge amount of overlap.  The order doesn't mean much.  I just want to know which prospects I should be focusing on.
