papalawrence Posted June 17 Posted June 17 (edited) So the thunderous start to June has now settled down to 8-6. When is the 2027 draft lottery? And given that next year should be a step back, time to start looking at potential 2028 picks as well. How did this happen? Edited June 17 by papalawrence Quote
GalagaGuy Posted June 17 Posted June 17 (edited) So here's my question, why is AJ taking all the heat instead of Fetter getting a good portion of it? There is clearly something wrong with the bullpen as there is not a single guy that can be relied on. The pitching coach should not be getting a pass. Edited June 17 by GalagaGuy Quote
IdahoBert Posted June 17 Posted June 17 It’s nice to see Kevin and his power swing development. Aside from that this game pretty much sucked. Quote

The offense scored 2 or fewer runs in 4 of the last 5 games. The pitching gave up 3, 3, 3, 4 & 4 in those games. Thats why. Even though the pitching hasn’t been great, they’ve given us chances to win. Quote

On the one hand it’s easy to look at that and just say it’s outside the expected norm and you could easily see that number correct back closer to even…. but anyone who has watched all the games this year know that there is too much swing and miss/strike taking in the lineup and not enough situational hitting. They deserve to have that bad of a record in close games because of how many at bats are thrown away most games. Everyone thinks the key to success is to let Greene/Carpenter/Tork/etc take their hacks and do damage—-but sometimes all we really need is a ground ball to advance a runner to third or a fly ball deep enough to drive in a run from third. The number of times we’ve had a runner at 2nd or 3rd this year with 1 or less outs and not been able to advance them or cash in the run is a huge problem. The power hitters are very streaky and everyone else besides McGonigle can’t make consistent types of contact. Thats my biggest gripe with Hinch. When runs are at a premium in a game, he does very little to try and manufacture anything. Not just bunts, but trying hit and runs and straight steals is not something we emphasize at all. Instead we strike out or pop out with runners on base and less than two outs all the time. Quote
romad1 Posted June 17 Posted June 17 Losing Torres really seems to kill the productive ABs for this team. They need someone like him next season. Quote

The fact that they are involved in a lot of close games is due to laclk of hitting though. 2 Quote

The pitching coach should not be getting a pass. with Vest and Holton I think it's fair to ask if Vedder is on the case, but in Vest's case, the loss of peak velo may be a physicall problem - it started last mid-season and continues this year. Holton is just getting hit more - the increase in WHIP is almost all hits, just a small increase in walks. So that should be something the pitch shape guru should be on. I think the rest of them just may not be all that good.. Jansen was, but his enemy is Father time. Quote

We might have seen the best days of guys like Holton and Vest. Add in the fact that the bullpen lacks swing and miss ability. There is plenty of blame to go around to the offense, the defense, and pitching. Even the better players have had their moments. I’m coming around to the thought that maybe this just isn’t their year. It’s statistically doubtful that they make this deficit up. Sure, the league might be weak. But they’re also towards the bottom of the standings of a weak league, so why should we assume there’s going to be any come back? Quote
