Maybe it’s because you’ve been spoiled by watching actual competitive games. 😁

I am spoiled by growing up in the 70s when the allstar game was fun.

It was also unique in a way it can't be today because we see so many games on TV and see the players on other teams.  Not even just game footage but everything else.  We have social media and all of that.  Seeing Lou Whitaker chat with George Brett in the dugout while Steve Garvey bats was neat by itself.   But now we have tiktoks and ESPN and all of that to see the interactions.

The high point for me was the ‘83 All-Star game at “New Comiskey Park“ when Fred Lynn hit the only grand slam in All-Star history to end 11 straight years of losing to the NL. Then came our 1984 run which I celebrated with a gaggle of people from Detroit who’d moved to Tucson and serendipitously became my best friends. It was a really happy time in my life.

I have contemplated this very point and while I would not trade away the chance to watch 162 or so Tigers games to go back to 40 plus an NBC Game of the Week, I do miss the special feeling of seeing other teams on those NBC games as well as the All-Star Games and October ball. The paucity of options really focused your attention on those games that were televised.

In the 70s the all-star game was larger than Christmas for me. Second only to top boxing matches

During the 70’s, I felt like I knew the Reds, Yankees and Dodgers teams as well as the Tigers.  They were often in the postseason and covered on Monday Night Baseball. Plus they had future HOFer’s.  Thurman Munson continues to be my all-time favorite non-Tiger.

'84 was perfect timing for me too.   The 1st year I was living in metro Detroit.   Went to over 40 games, only got into 1 WS game.   Watched the others from the roof of the Home Plate bar so had a front row seat for the antics of "Bubba" and his buddies.  And like you, it was a really happy time.

A little All Star trivia; The AL SP is a Blue Jay and the NL SP is from Philly. Name the last SP for an All Star game from those teams.

Without looking it up, Roy Holliday?

Bingo...too easy?

Well, now that I looked it up I don't know how I could have said Holliday :classic_laugh: - obviously it's Halladay.   The fact that it was a trivia question, it seemed like it had to be him.

Agreed. Oversatuation. But still, of all the sports, the baseball All Star game is the best. Its a real game and played just like real games are played. Expect great pitching, great defensive plays and clutch hitting. The old day memories are great but I still love the midsummer classic!

Same pitcher for both teams...pretty unique.

Oh, the game is only starting 25 to 30 minutes late. After all they had to sign the Declaration of Independence, they had to include the kids, they had to honor the folks in uniform, and they have lots and lots of commercials to show.

I enjoyed the NBA all star game for a stretch in the 80s and early 90s.  Since it’s more of a team sport it was nice to see rivals play together.  I remember Isiah laying one off the boards for Jordan to slam.
