buddha Posted July 15 Posted July 15 good. for all the reasons stated in the larkin/traded thread. its the best thing for the organization. now, it doesnt mean anything if they keep the rest of the staff. time for a clean break from the red wings alumni club. 2 2 Quote
NorthWoods Posted July 15 Posted July 15 I'm not opposed to the change. I am sad to see it end this way for The Captain. I think many fans will blame Larkin for this and it certainly won't do him any PR good. Quote

Cruzer1 Posted July 15 Author Posted July 15 (edited) According to the News, Yzerman stepped down https://www.detroitnews.com/story/sports/nhl/red-wings/2026/07/15/steve-yzerman-steps-down-as-gm-search-begins-for-replacement/90927121007/ Edited July 15 by Cruzer1 Quote
Mr.TaterSalad Posted July 15 Posted July 15 If they just promote Draper than this will be a failure. No more "Michigan Man" thing. Go get your Dusty May. Bring in a guy from outside the organization, who has no association with the franchise first and foremost. Get a GM who is good at scouting draft prospects and understands you have to build a team with top end talent through the draft. A GM who isn't married to veteran players and will allow kids to come up, make mistakes, and learn on the job. A GM who won't be a prick to his own players and will show them respect. A GM who will be smart, aggressive, and won't ball bust every free agent over a couple million bucks. Quote

gehringer_2 Posted July 15 Posted July 15 (edited) The is a Peter Principle case study, and I don't mean that facetiously or in a derogatory way about Yzerman. He thought he knew how to handle a situation that he ultimately didn't handle, because he didn't have the right skill set and/or the sense to hire people around him that did. So he rose to his level of incompetence. Probably driven by personal loyalty to people that he really needed to move out, an admirable trait in a friend, not so much in a pro GM tasked to build a winner. And the biggest surprise in this - that Chris Ilitch pulled the trigger. Or maybe to his credit Steve threw in the towel and saved him the hard decision. The other question that immediately pops up is did C.I. have conversations directly with players - including Larkin? One of things that immediate struck me in the Larkin affair was that we never heard anything about Ilitch talking to Larkin, though I can't imagine it didn't happen. lordstanley Posted July 15 Posted July 15 This absolutely has to be an outside hire. And that is scary enough, but because no obvious candidate out there who will be an upgrade, you are rolling the dice. But the alternative - Draper or Horcoff - would doom this franchise for another decade. Sad that it came to this, after so much hope 7 years ago, but to me at least it does not affect Yzerman's legacy as a player or Red Wings legend at all, I separate the player from the exec. That may not be the case for fans under 30. 1 Quote

When you don't operate at the highest level, anyone in your org who is successful is going to be a target to move up and all you can do is hope you can find another person good enough for the pros to want again. Jason_R Posted July 15 Posted July 15 Sad to see it end this way for Stevie but he just wouldn’t or couldn’t adjust. He didn’t maintain the relationship with his most important player, he didn’t embrace modern analytics. I assume Larkin’s trade request stands, but this does make a return possible. Quote

But it doesn't unburn the bridge. Larkin would never be viewed as he was. Quote

I don’t assume it will happen, but Ilitch has effectively indicated that Stevie was the bad guy in the relationship. I could see Chris hiring a new GM, and then saying something like, “Dylan Larkin is a Red Wing and will always be a Red Wing. My family learned a lesson from the Sergei Fedorov situation and we want to leave the door open for the new GM to rebuild the relationship with Dylan.” No, that wouldn’t totally fix things but it is plausible. 1 Quote
buddha Posted July 15 Posted July 15 if larkin pulls his trade request, they cant trade him. he has a full nmc. i cant imagine he would unless they trade for one of his friends. Quote

Jason_R Posted July 15 Posted July 15 I’m not saying they will or should. But when nothing happened at the draft, that left everyone looking toward the prospect of training camp and the start of the season with a showdown, and Larkin either showing up or sitting out. The fact that Stevie is not in charge anymore makes it a lot easier for the Red Wings and for Larkin to save face, if that is the best option available to both parties. Quote

Maybe, but if Chris comes out and Todd comes out and the other players come out and say, we are thrilled to have him back, I think that stuff calms down pretty quickly. Quote

If he pulls his NMC, I hope the next GM calls his bluff and trades away everyone remotely good around him over the age of 25. So essentially getting rid of Cat, Copp, Faulk, and Gibson to force Larkin to submit and want to get traded. Quote

Maybe some will blame Larkin but there will also be those who give him credit for getting needed changes made. Our current playoff drought is longer than the Darkness with Harkness years.... Quote
