True enough. I was rooting hard for him but he just didn't show enough in the spring to bring him north. Quote
romad1 Posted July 26 Posted July 26 The guys who were supposed to be difference makers are not. Kerry Carpenter needs to go into the desert or something to get his swing back. Quote
chasfh Posted July 26 Posted July 26 I have to defend McKinstry's base running overall here. While it's true he is one for five in SBs and has been picked off three times, stealing bases is not the end all-be all of base running. There is also the art of reading defenses and taking the extra base, and coming into the game today, McKinstry was at 56% versus league average of 42%, which puts him in the 86th percentile. So by that measure, he is actually a pretty good baserunner. Of course, his attempt to take third on a single to left field down one to end the eighth doesn't help the case I am making for him here ... 😏 Quote

Win win situation. 😄 That's a nice concept, but I wonder how often that really happens in sports. Some athletes have special relationships with a team - I don't think Skubal necessarily does - but once they're traded I think that link is severed or changed. It's like two college students each moving back to their respective hometowns in the summer and instead of trying the long distance thing for a couple of months they opt to take a break and see other people. Once that happens, one of them usually moves on. Not that I'm speaking from personal experience - or am I? Quote
Tigermojo Posted July 26 Posted July 26 Almost 12 WAR last year from McKinstry, Torkelson, Perez, Keith, Carpenter, Baez and Jones has become -1.9 WAR so far in 2026. 1 Quote

tiger2022 Posted July 26 Posted July 26 (edited) Just think...only 2 more years of Valdez for $37.5 and $35 million the next 2 years and $20 million signing bonus. $92.5 million to go. I could think of better ways to spend $92.5 million than give it to a total a-hole who also happens to be a below average mlb pitcher. I'll say it again, Harris got hoodwinked yet again. How many more of these bottom of the barrel starting pitchers will Harris sign or trade for? This makes the Alex Cobb signing look like a genius move. Edited July 26 by tiger2022 Quote

chasfh Posted July 26 Posted July 26 Well, look, yesterday and today were tough losses, there's no denying that. We needed at least three of four from one of the worst teams in the game who are without their best two players, and we didn't get that done. Now to get that 7-3 homestand we wanted, we have to take five of six from the O's and the A's. Tall order. Quote
chasfh Posted July 26 Posted July 26 Today's was the eighth home run the bullpen gave up in the 8th inning or later that put the other team ahead. Coming into the game we ranked fourth worst in that regard. Ironically, Kansas City is one of the three teams worse than us. Cold comfort, that. Quote

NorthWoods Posted July 26 Posted July 26 We need 2 outfielders. Bullpen help. Maybe an upgrade at 1st. Not an insurmountable list at all. Quote

Seems a strawman to me since I never mentioned trades or prospects. I was referring to what was needed before next season. But since you ask, maybe they can interview Jake and ask him? Or maybe you could ask about the Lorenzan trade? You know, one the CURRENT GM actually made. Even the Flaherty trade, we got prospects and Flaherty back. Quote

Still: situationally, I agree it was probably too aggressive a decision. Quote

If RHH hunt 'hanging' sliders from RHP, what do you call it when a LHH gets a low slider from a LHP with no depth, and that isn't breaking left to right enough to either buckle him off the plate inside or make him miss outside? I guess you call it a HOME RUN. Edited July 26 by gehringer_2 1 Quote
