Number one offseason priority is add guys to the bullpen who don’t walk guys and have velocity

 

I literally don’t care if we add anything else and run it back completely with everyone else

This game, win or lose, should serve as the reminder for why we dealt Skubal and Mize.  While this team should be and mostly is very good, they can’t overcome a tragic bullpen.

That bottom of the 7th with Lee at bat felt like the last best chance, but you never know, we’ve all seen these guys come back dramatically.

It's so strange. Tigers bullpen MLB ranks: 6th in ERA,7th in xERA, 15th in FIP, 8th in xFIP, and 7th in LOB%. Yet the Tigers are 12-21 in one run games. Lots of fumbles in high leverage situations, obviously. But is that something you can really plan for. Seems more random than anything else. Read an article somewhere about how much the Tigers struggle in close and late situations, both on the mound and at the plate. This more than anything explains this bizarre season. And is mostly statistical noise.

Yep.  And in watching a lot of the games this year, it’s been either because relievers come in and are immediately erratic to start their appearance and/or a complete inability to generate a whiff when they’re ahead in the count.  So many early inning walks and opposing batters getting hits in pitchers counts or being able to work back into the at bat if they’re down.

"Tragic" is probably as good an adjective as you can hang on this bullpen, because "terrible" they are not.

Another issue: how many 9th inning comebacks this year? I can think of one, against the Mariners. That's it.  That's pretty unusual as well.

That just seemed like a miserably unlucky series, but the Sox are definitely the better team.

I am reminded of the opposite.  It would have been nice to have Skubal and Mize pitching this series.

What was the word I used to describe the effect of getting swept by the White Sox? "Devastating"?

They have a better record, so they have been the better team this year.  I wouldn't say they are definitely better going forward based on one series.  The Tigers didn't play well in this series.  5 1/2 games back is probably too much though.  The wildcard is now their most realistic chance.
