I saw the new Running Man.  It wasnt good but definitely wasn’t the complete garbage of a remake that it appeared to be.  I’d call it entertainingly bad.

My son who is 50 years younger than me, breathlessly recommended Caught Stealing which is now available on Netflix and I watched it with him.

The first 2/3 of the film is basically deplorable, gut wrenching violence and I wanted to just turn it off, but I also wanted to see how it ended and the last third’s redemptive violence sort of made up for it.

If you already have Netflix, it might be worth a watch if you don’t mind being somewhat stained and in the end somewhat entertained.

Austin Butler plays a former star baseball player-turned-bartender who unwittingly runs afoul of New York City's criminal underbelly while pet sitting for his neighbor.

Regina King, Zoë Kravitz, Matt Smith, Liev Schreiber, Vincent D'Onofrio, Benito Martínez Ocasio, Griffin Dunne, and Carol Kane appear in supporting roles.

Tis the season. Time to watch what I consider the ultimate Christmas movie. Lion in Winter. It came out in 1968. Peter O'Toole, Katherine Hepburn, a very young Anthony Hopkins. It's a period piece set in 1183. King Henry II gathers the family to name his successor to the throne. Three sons, all are vying for Henry's affection. Elenor his wife who spends most of the year imprisoned. They all spend their time together plotting to force him into a decision.

Some great quotes

Quote
  • Geoffrey: I know. You know I know. I know you know I know. We know Henry knows, and Henry knows we know it. We're a knowledgeable family.
Quote
  • John: A knife! He's got a knife!
  • Eleanor of Aquitaine: Of course he has a knife, he always has a knife, we all have knives! It's 1183 and we're barbarians! How clear we make it. Oh, my piglets, we are the origins of war: not history's forces, nor the times, nor justice, nor the lack of it, nor causes, nor religions, nor ideas, nor kinds of government, nor any other thing. We are the killers. We breed wars. We carry it like syphilis inside. Dead bodies rot in field and stream because the living ones are rotten. For the love of God, can't we love one another just a little - that's how peace begins. We have so much to love each other for. We have such possibilities, my children. We could change the world.

The movies really suck lately. I’m thinking of getting rid of my Regal monthly subscription which I’ve had for six or seven years.

My son who is 50 years younger than me already got rid of his and he’s the demographic they want coming to the theater.

They’ve completely remodeled my 30 year-old Regal Theatre in Boise, and it looks like the bridge of a recent version the Starship Enterprise, but I could care less. The seating accommodations are spectacular, but there’s nothing to watch.

If the movies are not merely horror movies, which I’m totally tired of, they are retreads. The new Avatar… BFD. A new Zootopia. Another Wicked. Marginal right wing Christian movies. Another 5 Nights at Freddy’s retread horror. Another Predator. And the spate of post apocalyptic films are tedious.

Maybe it has something to do with the backlog of films that aren’t available due to the strike. I don’t know. It seems like that should be over by now.

On Amazon Prime they’re claiming that that terrible Christmas movie Red One is brand new. It came out last year at Christmas.

Guess I’ll watch a real Christmas movie on TV and see what happens at Nakatomi Plaza.

Actually I prefer another viewing of Lion in Winter. The ultimate family gathering at Christmas. Katherine Hepburn, Peter O'Toole, Timothy Dalton, Nigel Terry and a very young Anthony Hopkins.

I've felt the same way as a much more casual movie-goer. I will usually go two or three times a year, often by myself on a day I have nothing else to do.

But I won't go if there's just nothing worth watching. I looked last weekend and that's how I would describe the current slate. I have no interest. It feels like it's been forever since I had to choose between two I actually wanted to see. If I had to guess, it was probably 2018 when Infinity War and Deadpool 2 were both out... Normally it's "eh I guess this seems like it might be okay."

It feels like we get a really good original movie once every three or four years and then they just beat it to death for the next two decades. None I can think of this year. None I can think of in 2024. We got the Oppenheimer and Barbie summer in 2023. None I can think of in 2022.... Looking at 2024, the top ten highest grossing films were: Inside Out 2, Deadpool 3, Moana 2, Despicable Me 4, Wicked, Mufasa: The Lion King, Dune 2, another Godzilla, Kung Fu Panda 4, and Sonic 3.... Like holy sequel, batman! This year, the Minecraft Movie is the only original I can think of. And guess what's already gotten green lit for a sequel?

The last movie I saw in theaters was Weapons, which I thought was decent. But then it's offered in my HBO Max subscription two months later. I definitely could have waited if I didn't want the theater experience.
