Sadly, the initial foray into Georgia during the W Bush admin happened while we were totally up our own feelings about 9/11 and all the subsequent stuff.  I recall at the time being like..."we have no time for dealing with that" and that was wrong.  The US needed to make a stink about that and not allow him to seize a metaphorical sudetenland.

As I look back that whole period basically shaped a lot. of my thinking. My wife was part of the management team of an all news radio station in Chicago, I was working a split shift (6-10, 3-7) as a reporter for a traffic reporting service. Our 9 year old was basically a latch key kid. We had just moved there a few months before...

The church we had started to attend had midweek "study groups", nothing similar on weekends. As the Soviet Union began to crumble I received a call from one of the group leaders inviting us to attend. I explained our situation.  His response, "I bet they are eating it all up", meaning what was happening in the news.

We never returned to that congregation..

I'm interested in more details on this. When was this? What was everyone "eating ... all up"? What was happening? We're basically talking about two time periods: 1989, and post 9-11.

Around 1990, basically post Persian Gulf I, but with several repercussions. The Bush I recession was beginning to pick up steam. We lived in Hampton Roads before moving to the Chicago area, It was nearly impossible to sell our old condo, plus pay Chicago area size rent.

The event that triggered that particular comment was the fall of the Soviet Union. The All News stations were pretty much in constant coverage mode at the time

So what was the guy referring to when he said (snarked?) that "I bet they are eating it all up"? Was he commenting on stupid consumers who believe everything they see and read? That's kind of how it looks to me ...

It was a snide remark about how the "news" (Gorbachov's fall from grace) loved that sort of thing.

Not taking into account of things like overtime (which manage never gets). Basically just another idiot who did not understand the nature of the industry (at the time). The guy was probably a 9-5 er and didn't understand the real world and Wednesday Nights were not good for our schedule. (actually no weekday really was)

The things this will unlock!  Now I gather that other countries that have Putinist leadership can still step in and block the EU's attempts to fund Ukraine.

But, the entire MAGA, Tucker Carlson, Groyper, anti-Semitic, Christian Nationalist weltanschaung took a serious body blow today.

Ukraine is the biggest beneficiary (aside from the Hungarian people) of Orban's loss today.

Who is the biggest loser?

Putin...

or Trump/ MAGA/ right wing USA Fascists...?

I say Putin loses his biggest European partner-in-crime with Orban out.

Now is the time for Trump to put his money where his mouth is. He threatened to pour billions of our tax dollars, whatever that looks like, into Hungary to maintain fascism there. If he fails to do so, everyone else in the world can safely conclude he is, at long last, full of ****, and at that point they can **** with him as much as they want and get away with it. He's got one chance to maintain his Supervillain of the World status. It's put-up-or-shut-up time for him.

If things break the right way, this has a chance to be a turning point for us as well.

The Hungary election result is huge.  Everything the conservatives have been doing in the US was modeled after Hungary.  It gives me hope that this right-wing authoritarian movement in the US can be not only defeated but crushed.

We now need to complete the cycle of reform.  That means the people in the United States need to also be out in mass the days before Fall 2026 and Fall 2028 elections to prove that we will not allow the people in power f with our democracy.

I recommend the documentary about the Hungarian finance minister Miklos Nemeth who perhaps by failing to fund the border fence started the avalanche in 1989.

That's why destruction of government documents also has to be crime.

Aren't they trying to overturn the Presidential Records Act so Trump can take home all the documents he wants if/when he leaves, and destroy the rest?

Putin trying to have Trump get him a ceasefire so his Army could regroup after their terrible Winter/Spring offensive.

Plan B, since the Plan A of merely telling the press that Ukraine has already lost the war hasn't seemed to work.

Ukraine is winning if we have the sense to get rid of Trump.

Too much money for too many people while Trump enables it for that to happen.

I've been wondering how much the various republicans are having their beds feathered just to stay on board and shut the **** up. Things are probably happening right out in the open, but just try reporting on them without having it rejected as fake-newsery.

They are currently winning.  Ukraine has the advantage on the battlefield if the PRC doesn't throw in with Russia all the way.

He's going to do it anyway.  Why do they need a law?
