When it comes to “sides” I agree with the players. But I too am fed up with the echo chamber in some of the “media”. This isn’t a social Justice issue. There’s no moral imperative here. It’s business. I want to watch baseball and I don’t care who wins or loses as long as I get to do that.

I worked for Metro Traffic for several years. When they came into the markets they would make agreements with stations where they would take over payment for certain employees who would still broadcast on stations. The stations would turn over a certain number of minutes of commercial time to sell to clients. Since you still represented the station you were on you were still loyal to the station. The broadcast teams work similarly. They're probably effectively paid by the station but work for the team. A bit of disclosure, when we first came to Detroit my wife's position included supervision of the Tigers and Wings (and Lions) broadcasts. It was primarily the go between between the station and the teams. She did that as well with the Bears the last couple of years we were in Chicago. (She hates sports)

As a person that has training in some level of safety practice, I would say putting a TV over a table is pretty stupid. And there are certainly a lot people that could have told the restaurant owner that. The problem is that none of them worked for him. That is really the biggest problem in the way American business operates, they won't pay to keep the expertise they need in their own house - instead they contract everything out at the lowest $$ amount and because of their own ignorance about what they are doing, don't know if their contractors know what they should either. As bad as the product liability system it, it's about the only thing that pushes back against American business losing the last shred of accountability they have left. I mean - go right back the thing with Stafford - did they put up a stage without a railing or curbing? That would absolutely an accident waiting to happen, which really means it would be no accident at all. But the dirty little secret is that despite the ridiculous payouts when someone hits at the judicial lottery, the fact is that business knows those payouts still cost them far less than doing things right - and that is the real scandal, which is another reason the system doesn't change.

The McDonald's coffee lady was actually a very legitimate suit. She had 3rd degree burns on her legs that required multiple surgeries resulting from outrageously hot coffee - like 200*, nearly boiling hot. She also wasn't the first person to complain, hundreds had complained of injuries from the coffee temp before she sued. McDonald's only offered her like $1000 to pay for her medical bills, and the jury found that McDonalds was negligent. They fined them two-days coffee sales, about $3 million. She ended up settling for about $500k and McDonalds lowered the temperature of their coffee. Then when the corporate lawyers actually lost to the everyday American, they launched this massive (and extremely successful) smear campaign to make everyone think "oh the system is so broken, she spilled coffee, launched a frivolous lawsuit, and got off with millions!" when really, she was the personification of the legal system actually working. The more you know.

While I appreciate the truth that you can’t actually remove the book from being read because of the digital copies, I feel that the physical burning… this act in itself… is more than just “drama”. I find it excruciating in its message. Much like carrying a Nazi flag is more than just drama to every soul that sees it - physical book burning is meant to sear your soul. And, for sure, the curriculum changes should scare the holy hell out of all of us. So, if you have a voice and can bring it to board of Ed meetings in your town, for god’s sake, do it. Silence is compliance.
