  1. That always did seem goofy. But did it cover the actual video board or did it just cover the stationary advertisements? That’s the thing that always bugged me about the scoreboard. It was a giant thing in its totality, but it was covered by permanent advertising around its perimeter. The actual video board always seemed small in proportion to the whole scoreboard. I suppose it was still an upgrade over the Tiger Stadium scoreboard. Gosh, I can remember they broadcast an episode of “This Week in Baseball” during one pregame. On one hand, it was so cool to see the show on that big of a TV. On the other hand, seeing it in sepia tone was a bit of a bummer.
  2. Throwing that caution to the wind, the Tigers are going to win the World Series.
  3. I’d like to think the Tigers have a good shot at the playoffs. And I know a lot of folks like the pitching and the deeper collection of starters as opposed to last year. The thing that worries me about he starters, tough, is what happens if the inevitable attrition occurs too quickly, and they struggle to cover starts? It’s easy to say they have enough arms to cover 800-825 innings over 162 starts. But they’ve got to ensure that the reserves in AAA that get called up have enough innings to spare when they do emerge from Toledo. In other words, it’s good to have Manning, and Gipson-Long, and Flores, et al in Toledo. But they’re ramping up innings season over season as they progress level upon level. So if they’re needed to pitch MLB innings, the Tigers are going to need to monitor the minor league action to have those innings available. I guess I’m a bit concerned about the durability of the depth, if that makes sense.
  4. There will be several trades in order to make this happen, and the net will be 3 unprotected firsts out for 5 seconds and Todd Bridges in. Oh, and some ridiculous contract will also be brought in and then bought out. Probable use of the stretch buy out.
  5. But Sammons had an ERA of 0.00 in spring training.
  6. Where does Buddy Boeheim's career high scoring game rank?
  7. Agree, the Thursday start is odd. I don't know if MLB is blindly following the NFL lead with starting the season on a Thursday. If so, it just doesn't seem to translate. Or maybe they're creating the schedule based on whatever ending Sunday is on the calendar and working backwards? I don't know. As far as competition with the NCAA, I think that is just an coincidence with the calendar this year? I think the NCAA tourney is running late. I'm pretty MLB has opened on championship Monday before. I suppose once the NCAA goes to 96 teams and March Madness goes more into April, MLB would have more of a late March / early April Monday all to itself.
  8. Remember when a lot of us thought this team could be on the periphery of the playoffs this season? Good times.
  9. Oh, I think there's some honesty about future paydays. I don't know if it falls under ego or not. But he's right about how his age and batting line will be used during the 2024-2025 offseason. He's already got the lack of defense tied to him, too, which will exclude some teams from acquiring his services. And he was just signed recently for this season, late enough that he's going to have to take his spring training to AAA. So, he's already got a few things going against him.
  10. Its a little tougher the next day for those of us that engage in the 9/9/9. But we've got to power through it. Its Opening Day.
  11. Well, he apparently admitted to balking on San Francisco because of those dimensions, his hitting profile, and his age. He was apprehensive about going to San Francisco as a 36 year old hitter and seeing his home run levels drop because of the possible backlash that might occur for the next contract. I was listening to a podcast that took his 2023 batted ball map and plotted it in San Francisco and New York (and the obvious disclaimer of only half of his games would be in either park was acknowledged), and it was something like 36 home runs as a Met and 22 home runs as a Giant. Obviously there are other variables that would factor into the baseball’s destination (climate is an obvious one, but what about something like batter’s eye?), and this was a pretty simplified look at it. But directionally it makes one understand Martinez’s decision.
  12. Sounds like a matter of only a few minutes from the original mayday message to impact. ABC showed some still shots from video surveillance where you can see lights alternating on and off as it approaches the bridge with traffic on it.
  13. Not sure about river traffic. But it is silly to see the two bridges (the original I-280 along with the newer version) side by side next to each other.
  14. Seeing different video and then considering how heavy the ship had to be, I guess I was pretty naive with my thinking. The force at direct impact and then cascading away along the bridge would certainly put the rest of it under significant shock.
  15. That's unbelievable. They mentioned there were vehicles on the bridge. I didn't see anything about the timing between the ship hitting the bridge and the collapse of the bridge. It seems like with ample time, the bridge would have been closed out of caution, but maybe there wasn't enough time to do so. This could have been much worse given the time that it did occur. I don't know slightest bit about bridge engineering. I am stunned the entire thing collapsed. I guess I would have thought the section towards the right hand side of the video might have stayed somewhat in tact, but obviously that wasn't the case.
  16. Why haven’t we checked out?
  17. Free agents aren't always a sure thing either. See the SS?
  18. "Grandkids, come here. I want to tell you about the time I saw Buddy Boeheim have his career high scoring game."
  19. That's kind of where I am at. Chapman might have been the best 3B on the market, and his glove alongside Baez would have been fun on the left side of the IF, but his offense has dropped a bit from his prime Oakland days. Ignoring the compensation, I think he'd have been worth a short term deal to handle 3B while Jung is in the minors and to help lengthen the lineup a bit. I think Snell is suspect to coming back to earth this season. He walked a lot of batter last season and benefitted from BABIP. So, I wasn't into paying him off of a Cy Young season. A shorter term deal, ok, that's different. But, again, there's the draft compensation.
  20. Are you willing to give up draft compensation for 1-2 years on any of those players?
  21. Once upon a time, I had interest in Kathy Ireland.
  22. I think its interesting to note that while Baez had two of his better SO% seasons the last two seasons, he also had his two worst EV seasons. BABIP and ISO were poor last season.
  23. I would think that some sort of combination of Greene, Torkelson, Canha, Carpenter are the 1st 4 hitters. Meadows and whomever is catching are probably the bottom 2. I guess depending upon whomever is at 3B to go along with Baez and Keith around the IF and however the matchup vs the opposing SP looks might bounce Baez around 5th, 6th, or 7th early on.
