Hmmmm.... So, we all realize that RPs can have their ratios, at least the traditional ones like ERA & WHIP, dinged up pretty good by a rough outing. SPs have the QS and QS% stats (which admittedly are not perfect if the floor is a 4.50 ERA). The question for the room is do RPs have a similar stat? I suppose BSs is somewhat in the realm of that, but I guess I'm thinking about something more based along the lines of something ERA or WHIP based with an IP qualifier. Something along the lines of a quality relief appearance being at least an inning with an ERA of no more than 4.50 or something like that?

I don't think a simulcast would be that impossible. I may need to pay more attention to that the next time I watch a Walleye or Mud Hens game. Both have home games simulcast on TV & radio. I'll rather than listen, so that might not be the same experience, but I've never really considered whether the radio side is getting a poor broadcast at the expense of the TV broadcast.

Wow, I didn’t realize Carey was only 63.

This isn’t covered in the unwritten rules of baseball manuscripts, is it?

Is it just me, or does anyone agree that it looks like this ball is originally tracked right above the mound, maybe slightly to the 1B side, based on the Mariners’ initial reactions? That’s crazy. Did Chicago trade for the MetroDome’s air conditioning system?

I didn't hear Kapler's comments, but I agree about making the bullpen work for the series and reducing the opponent's options for the next game if it is the same matchup. If its a getaway game, maybe you just pack it up and move along. Or then again, maybe not, maybe you try something out for the next series. Maybe its advanced scouting, maybe it puts something to worry about in the mind of the opponent. I also heard on MLB radio yesterday about the angle of run differential and how that is a tie breaker this season. An extra run now is just as valuable as an extra run during a playoff push in September.

I don't know. At this point, they just have to surround him with the right talent to make him consider leaving a risky choice if his priority is to win championships.

That's where I am. Cunningham is justifiably in the discussion for ROY, that's good enough for me.
-
Did he do any last season? I cannot remember how many games he did. I remember Dan Petry and Austin Jackson helped fill in some, and I think there might have been a handful of games that Dan Dickerson was solo.

Casimir has been handed down on my dad's side of the family. I should check into when my ancestors popped on over, but have never really gotten into that much.

Originally I thought I was full into the Dodgers' decision. I'm a bit more off of that now. I guess if it were my decision, it'd be Kershaw's decision, but with stipulations. The bullpen is going to be working and ready for a quick hook, which probably happens right after the first base runner. Not only is player health a primary concern, but it was also a 3-0 lead, so it wouldn't be out of the realm to see the BP come into the game in the 8th & 9th if pitch count weren't a factor. But I think early on pitch count is a factor. How can it not be? MLB & MLBPA has allowed expanded rosters to accommodate for a shortened spring training. LA hadn't allowed any other SP go past 5 in its 4 other starts. Pitch counts were 78, 67, 62, 57 (bad outing). They are also going into this season looking for a ring, not a perfect game, and its pretty obvious that's what they are working toward right now. I think its easy to criticize the decision that was made, but I also think too often people can be too much favor of the immediate impact. Here's a thought. Maybe this was Kershaw's decision and Roberts is fine with taking the heat for it. Maybe they are both in alignment that the long game is the priority (and maybe it took a little convincing).

I was wondering about this earlier. Are Hill & Cunningham of similar athleticism, but the background of the eras that they play in kind of make that not as apparent? I think it’s agreeable that Cunningham’s era is more athletic than Hill’s. So, take any athletic player from Hill’s era, plop them into now, and they are less athletic looking? Similarly, take a player from today, flux capacitor them to yesteryear, and they look more athletic?

Its in there. Not only is it silent, but its also invisible.

My completely unqualified opinion (heck, it might be an unqualified guess) is that SPs are going to have a steeper drop off, in addition to the reduced stamina, a bit longer into this season as opposed to next season. Managers and the coaching staff are probably going to have a more difficult time at discerning when to get the bullpen and when to make the change before the opponent has things going. This is probably something that was mentioned around here before, I don't know. I wasn't following this one when Boston had their tea party, so I don't know if that's exactly what happened here or not. I know bad defense factored in. And then also working specifically against the Tigers is the lack of quality arms that they thought would be at their disposal. They've had to put Alexander in the rotation, and then they've lost Cisnero, Chafin, and Funkhouser to injury. I'm not all that sold on Cisnero especially Funkhouser repeating the standard stat success that they had last season. But there is still the ramification of losing your set up RPs and your best multi inning RP. This can easily tempt Hinch & Co to try to squeeze another hitter or inning out of the current P.

I guess I'm not as worried about some of the individual accolades. Cunningham is a star in the making, no question. The future is bright for both him and the team. I'll take that and be happy with it.

Well played by all involved.

Let's be honest. The name Casimir is a helluva lot sexier than Kutter.

I don't know. If Grossman does end up on the IL, that leaves only 3 true OFs on the big league roster (Meadows, Baddoo, Reyes). CastroH has spent time out there, but he's also the only bench IF. Clemens doesn't have much experience outside of 2B. And a quick check of Clemens' fielding history shows less than 200 IP in the OF. The other options are Cameron, Short, and CastroW, if they stick to the 40 (or Hill if he's recovered). It seems like it would be Cameron, but it sounded like the organization was a little exasperated with him before he was sent down.

I'll be honest, I thought he was going to lose when he got to a 3 ball count against Verdugo right after the MartinezJD HR. Didn't he go 3-0 before getting to a full count?
-
That's good.

Now steal 3B!

He pitched well yesterday, no doubt. I'm still on the side of doubtful of Manning, but I'm willing to be proven wrong.

His swing is incredibly violent at times. Like most times.
