The biggest lottery ripoff that I can think of happened to the Buffalo Sabres who finished last, not by much, the year that Conor McDavid was in the draft. The Sabres had not tanked, they were not historically bad and in fact had improved over their previous season. But Edmonton, who was third worst, won the lottery and took McDavid. The Sabres picked second and had to settle for Jack Eichel. Eichel isn't even on the same planet as McDavid.

I'm a long way from anointing Hinch with any special powers whatsoever. I still think of him as damaged goods who accepted the only job he was offered. He has 2 jobs: (a) manage the clubhouse and (b) manage the pitching staff. So far it looks like he can do (a) on a losing team with a lot of no name players, but he couldn't do it on a winning team with a lot of stars. So, we'll see, the jury is still out. As for (b), I don't have the expertise to evaluate it but there were times last year when no one in here was very happy with the choices being made. I don't see that he's much better or worse than anyone else there. Thanks to Al Avila, the manager gets to have a lot of input. That's a good thing. But if theTigers get back to winning 90 games a year it will be because of the players Avila and his scouting and analysis teams acquired, not because of the manager.
