  1. I have come to the conclusion that the chances of the Wings ever having lottery luck are roughly the same as me ever winning the 50/50.
  2. Oh c’mon. Chicago!!! Let the conspiracy theory talk begin
  3. Uneventful (unfortunately). First 13 teams held their position. Goes to commercial with 3 teams left. Chicago, Columbus and Anaheim. O
  4. I don't think any NBA team picking Wembenyana could screw that up. Just a matter of time before they are contenders. Whereas the Oilers floundered for years even with McDavid. But I care about the Wings way more than I do the Pistons, so if I could only choose one it would be Bedard.
  5. Matthews' contract expires after next year and the interesting part is that after July 1, 2023 he has a no movement clause. So if the Leafs get knocked out this week, they have about a month and a half to assess whether they will be able to sign him to a new contract. Otherwise he may be traded in June. If I were the Leafs (ugh, perish the thought), I'd a) sign Matthews; and b) dump Marner for whatever prospects I could get for him; c) use the net cap space gain after re-signing Matthews and dumping Marner to add a better goalie and shore up defense; and d) fire coach Keefe.
  6. Boy, Leafs fan, you sure showed them. Stunning and brave
  7. Love those Panthers. Overtime winner gives them 3-0 series lead.
  8. Accounts I’ve read seem to indicate that Probert was the biggest name he was clearly going through issues and guys like Klima should have known better. Here is Keith Gave reminding us that Jacques Demers came out of it looking as bad as anyone. https://www.freep.com/story/sports/nhl/red-wings/2019/04/10/bob-probert-death-goose-loonies-detroit-red-wings/3413295002/
  9. Hmm, what if the Tigers don’t actually suck?!
  10. How many players can be remembered for 3 such varied reasons 1) wild defection from Czechoslovakia. 2) apparently the ringleader of the Wings’ infamous Goose Loonies 3) the 3OT winner in the SCF. As for 2), is Albom melodramatic or what. Yeah, the incident was a bad idea, but no one got killed. https://www.mitchalbom.com/wings-lost-much-more-than-a-game/
  11. https://www.detroitnews.com/story/sports/nhl/red-wings/2023/05/04/petr-klima-former-detroit-red-wings-goal-scorer-dies-at-age-58/70183159007/ https://www.vintagedetroit.com/the-defection-of-petr-klima-was-like-a-bad-spy-novel-but-red-wings-got-their-man/
  12. 2022 Tigers: 12-17 1987 Tigers got off to an 11-18 start. Just sayin'.
  13. Before the surgery announcement, did we even know he had been injured? I just thought he played 9 games and then was stopped to not burn a year. I might not have been paying attention though.
  14. Save us, Florida! Panthers win game 1, 4-2. Played a perfect road game, very disciplined. Bobrovsky came up huge when needed, including on a dazzling Leafs PP in the 2nd period.
  15. I have mixed feelings. They started off in Kingston, Ontario in the mid 80s, which is a college town, so through word of mouth news of them spread among students of other schools. But slowly, this was still in the ‘80s. Two of my closest friends from high school went to school in Kingston and I visited them a few times. By 1988 the Hip must have played Toronto’s Horseshoe Tavern a dozen times that autumn for about 200 people. I went to almost every one, it was around the corner from my apartment. The shows were amazing. Downie still had a bunch of hair and it would be flying around. Kinduv how I imagine it would have been like to see REM in Athens around 1980. Told everyone about them, many thought I was a bit obsessed. Listened to their first EP dozens of times. Then I moved away, travelled around the world for a couple of years and studied in Europe. By the time I got back in 1993 they were big across Canada. But I had changed. Even their old music didn’t do much for me anymore. Listened to some of their new stuff from ‘93 onwards but nothing really clicked. Never went to a Hip concert after 1989. Don’t even feel nostalgic about it.. Can’t really explain why, as by all accounts they had several classic Canadiana albums.
  16. Good points. Michael J Fox is another name I forgot. Highly respected and admired by Canadians of all stripes.
  17. Both Lightfoot and Howe by the last couple of decades of their lives had a low profile with any Canadian who is younger than I am (1967). I’d argue the death of Gord Downie (lead singer of the Tragically Hip) was bigger news here than the death of Howe. Howe and Lightfoot would be thought of more like other national icons like Joni Mitchell, Anne Murray and (maybe) Margaret Atwood. Bigger names within Canada are Don Cherry, Orr, Gretzky, Lemieux, The Rock, Chris Hadfield Celine Dion, Shania Twain, Ryan Reynolds.
  18. https://www.si.com/betting/2023/05/01/updated-stanley-cup-odds-nhl-playoffs-second-round The second round starts on Tuesday and features some exciting matchups. The new favorites to win the Cup are the Maple Leafs, who will face off against a Panthers team that just eliminated the previous favorite. The Oilers and Golden Knights sit behind Toronto as the next two teams with the shortest odds but Las Vegas and Edmonton will go head-to-head in the second round. The Devils will play the Hurricanes and the Kraken now take on the Stars.
  19. Two degrees of separation between Gordon Lightfoot and John Belushi. https://deadline.com/2020/08/cathy-smith-dead-obituary-john-belushi-drug-overdose-gordon-lightfoot-sundown-1203024794/#:~:text=Cathy Smith%2C the onetime girlfriend,Canada's The Globe and Mail.
  20. Haven’t heard. I guess not yet.
  21. So in the past 24 hours or so the two SCF finalists from 2022 and this year’s President’s Trophy winner have been eliminated.
