I know PEDs certainly didn't hurt him and I know there are many benefits to them but I just question how much they really could've helped somebody like him. By that I mean you often hear the narrative that PEDs turn potential long fly outs into HRs but Bonds' HRs weren't wall scrapers, I recently watched a sped up video of all his HRs and I believe I counted 10 post 2000 that I would describe as "wall scrapers" or balls that landed within the first few rows behind the fence. The overwhelming majority were 420+ hit half way up the stands that atleast theoretically would've been gone even if you took some bat speed away. -
Brandon Inge could hold a baker's dozen and hit a golf ball 300 yards while doing so.

Don't want to go on a side bar about Bonds and the legitimacy of his records but one thing that I think doesn't get talked about enough about his numbers skyrocketing late in his career is him introducing the armored elbow pad. Once he switched to armored one he started crowding the plate more which in turn allowed him to choke up on the bat even more giving him even more control over it along with just being able to cover more of the strike zone. Of course that isn't the sole reason for his insane numbers, there also was rapid expansion, PEDs and most importantly God given talent but I do think it helped him more than people realize or talk about. -
That pic makes me think of this Joel Embiid tweet from years ago, even though it's like 7 years old it has always stayed in my memories.

Agreed about the peers part, also it's all in your mindset but to me I always put more emphasis on peak vs. longevity. I often go back to Johan Santana, he was off the ballot after his first year where as personally I would've strongly considered voting him in, certainly shouldve gotten more support than he did. My reasoning is that for a 7 year stretch he was probably considered a top 3 pitcher in baseball and for a few of those years he was seen as the very best. In my eyes if you are viewed as the very best pitcher on the planet for that amount of time you should at the very least be right on the cusp of the Hall of Fame especially since his career was cut short due to injury, it's not like he was elite for 7 years then was complete trash for a decade. -

Freehan was before my time but looking over his resume I really don't get why he didn't make the Hall. I mean he was an All Star for 10 straight seasons so I imagine he was always looked at as one of the 2 or 3 best at his position for over decade right? You would think that would've been enough to get him but since this all happened before I was born I have no idea how he was viewed by the National media or what they really paid attention to when they were voting on the HOF. Lou on the other hand I can kinda understand cause while certainly deserving the things he excelled at weren't really appreciated as much when he was up for the Hall, like if he retired 10 years later I think it's almost certain he would've gotten in. -
This isn't necessarily about the incident here but in regards to hazing in general I never really understood it and it certainly has no place in this day and age. Some relatively "good natured" rookie hazing I'm not totally against like for instance I remember going to a Tigers game and one of the teams had the rookies carry out some of the equipment in pink Barbie(or some girl based toy like that) themed backpacks to the bullpen but the harsh and vile things that you hear about still should be outlawed and any coach that oversees that and lets it go on needs to be reprimanded or fired.

Luckily though 2 of the categories were HOFers and .300 seasons which definitely made things easier.

Reading up on Law's chat about the draft and somebody asked him if the Tigers approach this year was different due to the firing of an "old school scout guy" in Avila(their words) to a more analytic based guy in Harris and Law responded with this. "GMs don't make the picks in most cases, although they can set philosophy. Mark Conner was a successful scouting director in San Diego under a fairly old-school approach." I figured the GMs weren't the be all end all when it came to the draft but this makes it sounds like they have very little input which surprises me, can anybody like Edman, Mark or somebody else verify if this is accurate?

I've heard mixed report about that, at first most of the reports I read said that he was a SS for sure and now I'm seeing more that say that he either already is or will have to move to 2B in the future. If that is the case it does temper my excitement a bit for him but if he can hit I guess it really won't matter if he ends up a 2B.

I like the Iguodola comp, that would probably be a near best case outcome for the him and the Pistons but I do see the similarities particularly in the young Iggy.

According to statcast Jobe's stuff has been electric and as advertised when we drafted him but as you said it has been an extremely small sample and he hasn't thrown many pitches in any starts so it's hard to say if he would maintain that throughout a regular length start. If he shows he can then I definitely think he is worthy of being a top 3-5 prospect for us with the potential to be even higher down the road cause there is no doubt that the stuff he is featuring thus far is Cy Young caliber stuff. He'd be in the top 1% in both velo and spin rate among starters in the Majors if the numbers he has shown this year actually ended up being his norm even in longer starts.

I didn't want Ausar at first mainly because I have a biased towards offensive minded players particularly ones that can shoot and since shooting wasn't the strong point of his game I naturally didn't really even consider him. But then after the rumors came out that a team in the top 6 may have made him a promise I started to look more in depth at his game and seeing how hard he worked on defense and his overall athleticism made me warm up to him. I was still in the Hendricks camp at draft time but I certainly wasn't disappointed with Thompson, where as a couple months ago I probably would have.

SGA, Chet, Giddey and Williams is definitely the best young core in the league imo, not to mention the other young players they have and of course the assets still coming. Definitely should be a team that becomes one of the top contenders for years to come.
-
Agreed, I think Clark and Keith are in their own tier then after that there are a number of different players that you can basically put in any order depending on your views.
-
I think alot of it goes to how you view your ratings, like if you put more emphasis on upside then I think Jung may be a little high in mine and others cause I don't see All Star level upside but if you put emphasis on the likelihood they amount to anything in the big leagues than I think Jung is worthy of being a top 5 prospect for us. I think his bat is good enough to be a solid contributor for an MLB team but unlikely to be a true impact one, yeah his defense will probably be subpar but he can stick around in the MLB if he can put up league average or slightly better offensive numbers and be able to play at 3B or 2nd in a pinch if need be which barring some sorta major injury or rapid decline is something that I feel pretty confident in that he will be at the least. And who knows maybe the bat turns out better than expected, there certainly is a non zero chance that it does indeed become a plus one.
-
You could certainly make a case for Jobe to be that high considering the stuff he has flashed since he came back this year but I still want to see a bit more from him to confirm that he is healthy and last season's subpar performance along with the injury was just a fluke thing and something that is behind him now.
-
Not that anybody really thought he was going to retire but Lebron confirmed that he will indeed be back for his 21st season next year.

My Jason Grilli pick was probably the best one of the day for me, only reason I remember it so fondly was because I was actually in attendance a couple rows behind the Rockies bullpen like a week or so after he was traded to them and my friends and I joined others in some good nature heckling of him in which he was a good sport about who responded back to all of us.
-
I wonder if it will get to the point where the obvious picks end up having low scores cause nobody will pick them cause they think it's too obvious. Like the Bonds or Mays pick for SF 500HR guys, watch them end up with a low score cause people purposely avoid picking them.

Immaculate Grid 102 9/9: Rarity: 58 IMMACULATE! 🟩🟩🟩 🟩🟩🟩 🟩🟩🟩 Play at: https://immaculategrid.com @immaculategrid x @baseball_ref Nailed this one today which is a surprise since it had my arch nemesis the Rockies on it, fortunately it offset that by having the Giants who I know a lot about and of course the Tigers. My worst pick was the Giants 500 HR pick, didn't go with the super obvious Bonds but still had to settle for a relatively obvious one cause I was drawing a blank on any of the players that may have had a short stint with them.
-
Not that it's saying a whole lot but I think Ausar is already our best defender on the team outside of probably Stewart.

In regards to JHM being in the top 5 I have him there just cause I think he has a higher floor than all the other Tigers prospects.(not counting this class since I dont know much about them or the guys I have above him) I think at the very least JHM is going to be a league average bat in MLB for atleast a few seasons. While that isn't all that valuable as a whole as a floor that is alot more than I can say about the rest of the Tigers prospects outside of the folks I mentioned.
