gores comes in and makes splashy headline making decisions. 1) hiring svg with no front office experience to be gm and coach; and 2) hiring a very reluctant monty williams for an obscene amount of money. both decisions have the hallmark of someone who has no knowledge of how to run a successful basketball organization. early on he let dumars run everything. that failed. weaver appeared to be an acceptable hire at the time but has been shown to have been a mistake. the rumors were that tellum wanted collins to coach and weaver wanted ollie. gores likely "broke the tie" by inserting his poor bball knowledge and looking for the shiniest, most expensive (and therefore the best) toy he could find, ergo monty. and while monty has been a masterclass on poor coaching, its not like ollie set the world on fire. if tellum really is running the show now, that's got to preferable to gores or weaver.

if only you were a little bit taller, you could have been a baller...

the system still has no rules and no teeth to it. this is all a prelude to the scenario we've all been talking about for years: unionization and collective bargaining. until then its still the wild west. do you think ole miss, lsu, and ohio state boosters are suddenly going to stop paying players extra cash because theyre now "officially" getting paid? come on.
-
because we saw how monty handled the roster and his lineup moves during the game. they were very perplexing, to say the least. yes, the roster was garbage, but monty's choices of who to play during games was downright malpractice. they had to cut killian to get monty to stop playing him instead of ivey, for example.

doesnt tellum own a piece of the team?

im sure that's just a coincidence.

monk's 5 years younger. i'd rather pay for his prime than kcp's decline. but if you're going to prioritize defense, then kcp would be a better pick and will probably be cheaper. -

he'll get a really nice raise out of our interest. unless they've been "told" that he wants the move. but that's dangerous because you could get hit with tampering charges. -
lets hope so. that's the biggest weakness on the roster. the rest of the team is pretty complete (although they need jack campbell to make some improvements this year). oh, and they have to fire ben johnson. i've been told he's weighing them down...

how's that trae young trade looking now? the only thing i hate about luka is that he's such a whiner. it gets annoying. reminds me of tim duncan crying about every call.

none of the options for cap space are really intriguing. it is really frustrating to see how other franchises operate and to be a fan of one of the dumbest. -

tank for the #5 pick next year! -
him and rey rivera.

panthers in 5. maybe 6. rangers are top heavy. panthers are a complete team. shesterkin standing on his head could change things, but florida is a much better team.

he instituted advances in detroit's system YEARS after other organizations had done it. that's not a mark of success in my eyes. and let's not forget, avila was a top exec in the previous org who disdained such advances. and avila himself, upon taking control of the org, did not immediately implement changes and instead kept the same old fashioned regime in place for years. he was kept in his job because chris illitch didnt know any better and it was the easiest solution. and he proved ALL of us doubters right by failing to make the organization better when they were good (jordan zimmerman? mark lowe?) and then failing to capitalize on the organization's assets to make them better long term (the best return they received for the best hitter on the market and a generational pitcher is jake freaking rogers. a back up catcher.) so yes, his STINK is still being excised by this organization. and yes, if he got one right, it is mitigated by the 10 he got wrong. he is a failure as a gm and he set the tigers back a decade, and your obsessive love for every tigers prospect no matter how middling they may be will not change the results.
-
whatever word you want to use. you've extolled the virtues of al avila repeatedly, and said he laid the foundation for the next great detroit team. and so far, you have been wrong. you should own it instead of splitting hairs about "genius" and "1970s prospects and not 1980s team dominance."
-
i dont see how you can give him credit for starting things years after other teams have done it. like it waa a good thing. he was a day late and a dollar short. not every individual move was bad, but collectively they were awful. he never rebounded from his initial terrible free agent signings and inability to get a good return for the stars on the team. he was the worst gm since randy smith and led the tigers through the worst period in franchise history. his parting gift to us is the worst offensive regular player in mlb. he was a complete failure.
-
youre also the one who said this group of avila prospects was going to return us to 1984 type glory. no offense. i'm really at a loss as to how anyone can reasonably look at the state of the tigers for the last 8 years and say "hey, that guy did a really good job with them."
-
perhaps they should have looked for something besides a one year college wonder at pitcher?
-
i doubt it. i dont follow the baseball draft as much as the other sports. i do remember liking nick madrigal a lot and that hasnt worked out very well. but i am not a baseball gm. i am not saying that they should listen to me. i am saying his picks have not panned out yet and, as such, have not been good picks. that's what he was paid to do and he wasnt very good at it.
-
i like it better than the parker meadows, kody clemens, kingston liniak, adam wolf, hugh smith, eric de la rosa, and jeremiah burks picks.
-
don cherry, is that you?
-
your scouts and general managers are paid to make those decisions and not go by what's in the press. so far, mize and tork have been massive failures. however, its still very early in their careers and plenty of time to turn it around. but the "lolz everyone said they were top prospects so the fact that they didnt pan out isnt a black mark on the people who drafted them" argument doesnt fly with me. the people who drafted them are supposed to know more than keith law or baseball america. its a results based business. if they fail, the people who drafted them fail.

yeah, matt stafford is a really good qb.

i love the idea of adding monk in free agency. i loved it years ago when weaver was intent on collecting failed big men or using cap space on joe harris. now monk will be expensive. a good organization would have identified monk (or divencenzo) as potential contributors years ago. a good organization would identify that type of under-the-radar player this year. THIS organization trades assets for james wiseman. which is why the only real acquisition that matters this year is the president of basketball operations. weaver simply must be replaced.
