LOCKOUT '22: When will we see baseball again?
buddha replied to Motor City Sonics's topic in Detroit Tigers
btw, european soccer owners look longingly at the american model and wish they could emulate it. this past year a number of big clubs got together and tried to form their own "super league" wherein they would all play a round robin style tournament against each other every year. but there would be no promotion and no relegation. just marquee matchups of real madrid v manchester united and barcelona v juventus every week. but the fans went ballistic and held protests and riots, stormed fields. the idea of european soccer without the incentive of promotion/relegation and just guaranteeing the big clubs money was too much foe most fans. the idea was abandoned and most of the big clubs issued apologies. for now. the lure of that kind of money and certainty of income will continue, especially as many if the traditional big clubs (the spanish and italian giants in particular) have been left in the dust by the amazing revenues from english soccer, as well as the influx of oil money that has propped up clubs who have unlimited budgets (chelsea, man shitty, psg, and now newcastle). the old guard cant keep up.- 1,851 replies

it wouldnt. american sports are inidividual universes that guarantee a certain income for their owners and limit their labor costs with salary restraints. nothing identical exists in europe (especially england). however, many euro leagues have strict financial rules that you cannot break in regards to club debt. go over the debt limit by the new year and you will be punished with a points deduction (like derby - pronounced DAR- be - in england this year). but back to promotion and relegation. it wouldnt work here. but if it did, you would have the bottom four teams get relegated to triple a (baltimore, arizona, pirates and texas) the worst in the al (baltimore) and the worst in the nl (arizona) are automatically down. the next two play a three game series against the runner up in the aaa west and aaa east divisions and the winner gets to play in mlb the next year. last year it would have been durham bulls promoted, buffalo bison v pittsburgh for promotion. and tacoma raiders promoted, and the sugar land skeeters v the texas rangers for promotion. it would be fun and is a surefire way to prevent tanking because no one wants to go down to triple a.- 1,851 replies

he wont be in the norris conversation this year but he should be the calder winner. i have a feeling it will be zegras because he 1) is having a good season; and 2) scores goals and makes highlight reel plays. but it should absolutely be seider. he's a top defenseman as a rookie, plays on the pk, pp, and against the other teams best every night. he's a rock. and he's getting better as the year has gone on. raymond has fallen off a bit (and it hurts him to not have bert up there every night getting pucks for him and screening goalies), but seider is actually improving as the year goes on. he's taking the puck up the ice more now, he's getting more physical in defense, and he's shooting more. he's the real deal. if this holds up he could be - dare i say - on the lidstrom path? maybe more chris pronger with better wheels?

los angeles had a 36 share, which, given its size, was more than double the viewers in cincinnati. so yeah, the league could actually put another team in LA and be just fine. cause LA is so flipping huge. if youre the league, buffalo and cincinnati are fun little franchises that support their teams, but LA is where the money is, even if the fans dont come to the games as much. -

are you talking about european soccer leagues? each country has their own league system. it has a top division and then lesser divisions. the teams in the divisions range from professional powerhouse billion dollar franchises (manchester united and liverpool), to club teams from small villages made up of part time players. the general method of relegation/promotion is that the top 3 teams from the lower division move up to the next highest division the next season, while the bottom three teams from the upper division move down. different leagues do the promotion and relegation in different ways. for instance, in the english leagues, the top two teams are promoted straight, but teams three through six play in a playoff to see who gets the last spot. in germany, the bottom two teams are relegated and the top two teams promoted, but the third place team has to play the last potentially relegated team in a playoff to see who gets to stay in the upper division. some leagues dont do these types of playoffs at all. and then the top 2 to 4 teams (depending on a uefa formula to determine league strength) make the champions league the next season. thats where the real money is.- 1,851 replies

pecota tiger numbers are.....not good. PECOTA is not a huge fan of Javier Baez. The system projects the shortstop to contribute just 1.4 wins above replacement (WARP) with a .229 batting average, .685 OPS and 82 DRC+.

the rams will extend stafford and spread out the cap hit, so they have more salary cap room this year. -

they play them intermittently in the middle of the week (tues or wed for champions league, thursday for europa league). there are also cup competitions that take place during the season. the nba is toying with doing one of those. it all adds up to lots of games. even more when you throw in international competitions like world cup and regional championship qualifying.- 1,851 replies

and like lee said, if you fail, you actually pay a price. unlike in the us where you are rewarded for failure.- 1,851 replies

and you dont have to win it all to be rewarded. there are multiple competitions that teams compete in. the regular season means something because if you do well (top 4 in big leagues, top 2 in others) youre rewarded by playing in extra competitions the next year. but its not like here where half the league makes the "playoff" and that decides a champion. the champion is the team that finished with the best record in the regular season. plus there's the national team aspect that doesnt exist in us sports.- 1,851 replies

it works because nothing is happening for most of the "action." basketball, hockey (and yes, soccer) have almost constant movement amd something is always happening. baseball is a game of standing around for the most part.- 1,851 replies
