  1. the bears are old at every position BUT qb. their offensive line is trash. montgomery is good but he's a rb and doesnt matter. they have one really good receiver who is about to be a free agent and leave. quinn just had a career year in his mid 30s. mack is now in his 30s. both are paid very highly. other than roquan smith their defense is old and getting worse. the bears took their shot when they traded for mack. they went 12-4 and won the division and were a double doink field goal away from the nfc championship game. problems at qb killed them. but unless fields turns out to be deshawn watson minus the need for rub and tugs, theyre not in a good place in the rebuild with the rest of their team.
  2. staley overthinking it as usual.
  3. right now (and all this will change probably) i see the lions as a 5-7 win team next year picking in the 5-10 range. if they need to move up to 1-3 to get a qb its gonna cost them multiple first round picks. the niners gave up 3 to get to #3. the bears gave up 2 to get to where they picked fields. and one of the picks i see the lions giving up is going to be low first. "they could have just picked fields". sure. perhaps they didnt like fields? he was terrible this year (in fairness, all the rookies in bad situations were terrible). perhaps the lions want an offense with a good surrounding cast BEFORE taking a rookie qb in order to maximize his rookie salary time? take the qb last after you have all the other pieces? no use wasting a year of fields' development on this team without any skill players to help him (see what happened to him on the offensively talentless bears). spending three picks to get up to take a qb at the top of next year's draft wouldnt be a waste of anything. to the contrary, it would be a wise use of picks if you dont like any qbs this year or you want to draft some more high end receiver and defense talent this time around and then have some money to spend in free agency and a fancy new qb next time.
  4. and that's a bad thing? if the "rookie qb" is a franchise player then its worth it. and you'd still have the rams pick this year.
  5. or his offensive line, who buckled and crumbled in the face of the niners pass rush very very quickly.
  6. i envision the lions giving up their own first rounder, the rams first rounder, and a future first rounder to trade up next year.
  7. i would trade the rams picks for deshaun watson if he would just hurry up and pay off his extortioners. of course, so would other teams who would beat any offer the lions could make.
  8. or you could trade for a qb or sign one, i guess. goff hasnt "earned" anything this year. he is adequate on his best day and he has a big contract that prevents him from being cut after this season. i dont know enough about scouting to know whether they should take a qb this year, but if they like a howell or a willis then they should do it with the rams pick. goff cant throw downfield and has no pocket presence and cant run. i really dont think he's anything more than a backup in today's nfl.
  9. i like mgoblog, they're just homers. although brian had some sort of nervous breakdown after last year. this year has been good for his mental health, at least.
  10. he hasnt done it in years. for every example you cite about someone cutting an older qb for a younger pick there is an opposite example like mahomes or wilson. its fine to roll with goff next year because the lions arent likely to be very good anyway.
  11. why would chris godwin sign a one year deal with anyone, much less the lions?
  12. shot in the dark couldnt hurt, i guess. gave up nothing to get him on a trial run cause he's restricted at the end of the year.
  13. lol. jared goff has been complete garbage all season, but he plays a couple of good games down the stretch and now he's the answer. lol. goff is who he is. and its not good.
  14. he has not earned another year but he will be given another year because of his contract, which was likely always the plan since they moved his money around at the beginning of the year.
  15. been done a bunch of times in soccer. cant do it in football unless its overtime or the end of the game.
  16. well then we agree. you should let seth from mgoblog - which was the tweet posted by romad with which i disagreed - know.
  17. not much of a difference between pick 1 and 2 this year. just beat the packers.
  18. just blowing holes right through the lions defensive line.
  19. sure, but lets not lie to ourselves that michigan takes working class strivers over rich mediocre kids as some sort of guiding principle. that's a myth. michigan people have a very over inflated opinion of michigan's "working class" sensibilities. also, as a side note, it is an interesting shift in what america values that michigan grads would think that's something to be proud of. 100 years ago it likely would have been an insult.
  20. goff stepped up in the pocket!
  21. michigan taking a working class kid over a mediocre rich kid is more of the myth michigan people like to believe. michigan takes as many donors' kids, rich kids, and kids from hoity toity east coast private academies as anyone other top university. i like mgoblog, but those guys get a little annoying sometimes with their um homerdom.
  22. raymond is starting to slow down. teams are targeting him and really going after him physically. welcome to the league, kid. seider seems to be the same. still making the occasional mistake but pretty obviously their best defenseman and one of their best players. he seems to always be on the ice, pp, pk, against the other team's best players. the fact that he's doing well and not just holding his own says a lot about him.
  23. no. not at all. coordinators get fired all the time.
  24. hopefully next year brings some athletes to this team.
