LOCKOUT '22: When will we see baseball again?
buddha replied to Motor City Sonics's topic in Detroit Tigers
now youre just making shit up. gambling has been illegal for years and there have been tons of gambling scandals in the united states (and many more we dont know about, im sure). and if youre SO VERY VERY CONCERNED about the effects of gambling and why a sports league's association with it might cause harm to people, why arent you out protesting mlb's lifelong association with making money off of alcohol? i never said that american sports COULD NEVER experience a gambling scandal. in fact, i said the exact opposite of that. i said american sports has experienced multiple instances of gambling scandals PRIOR TO the legalization of gambling nationwide and major league sports' association with it. ask tim donaghy. how you prevent a gambling scandal is by paying players a ton of money and making huge penalties for complying. you get your gambling scandals from college players and refs. now go have a beer, maybe even the official beer of the detroit tigers and major league baseball?- 1,851 replies

he's been a really bad owner. i mean, look at his latest foray into decision making. he fires a successful well regarded head coach because the coach knows his qb isnt very good. i mean, they designed an entire offense predicated on tua not being able to read a defense quickly. the whole offense is quick short passes and screens. brilliant use of a bad qb and a bad oline. and he fired him for it.

ok, now do the examples of point shaving in america before sports gambling was legalized. i dont give a flying fuck what you think either, lol. and i'm not trying to shame you, i just disagree with you. and i think you are "clutching pearls" when it comes to this issue. other than that, you're a lovely guy. 🙂 lee on the other hand...- 1,851 replies

gambling has been a major part of all international sports forever. the recent scandals of people throwing games have been before gambling was legalized in american sports. this is like complaining that players are going to smoke the majijuana now that its legal. drugs will ruin the game! put your pearls away, legalized gambling has no effect on the product on the field now matter how much your strain your arguments to make it seem like it does. legalized gambling is good for the sports because it drives interest and increases revenues.- 1,851 replies

its striking how quickly the game used to move. pitchers got the ball and threw it. you didnt have to walk around the mound, tug your hat three times, and shake off ten pitches.- 1,851 replies

LOCKOUT '22: When will we see baseball again?

i blame the players but ultimately it is management's responsibility. if you put in requisite penalties the players will adjust. if you let then do whatever they want, they will do whatever they want and take their own sweet time at the plate and on the mound. current leadership is at least trying to look into incentives to speed things up and are experimenting in the minors. that's a good thing. they hired theo to help and he's a smart guy with baseball's best interests in mind. that's another good thing. and while i'm interested in seeing how their tweaks play in the minors, it still feels like they are messing around on the margins rather than dealing with the issue directly. put a fucking pitch clock out there and if they dont throw it in 15 seconds call a ball. of the batter steps out of the box once they step in its a strike. the players will bitch. player slappy reporters will complain. those complaints will be echoed here by the usual union apologists. so be it. they will adapt and it will become a part of the game. you want to watch a boring game? go watch basketball before the shot clock. or try to watch a college football game with 5 minutes of commercials after every other play. baseball can be quick and exciting if we let it. we just need to let it.- 1,851 replies

i remember an experiment done not so long ago from a game in the 80s and a game in the 10s to see why the game in the 10s was taking an hour longer. the finding was that it was almost exclusively due to pitching changes and the time in between pitches. advertising has always existed. go back and watch a game from the 60s or 70s. get ball pitch ball. get in the box and stay there. its a remarkably faster game and much easier to watch.- 1,851 replies

pitch clocks and requiring batters to stay in the box solves the problem. everybody knows it, but they cant get the players to do it.- 1,851 replies

black kids choose not to play baseball, its not because of something baseball has done or didnt do. the players union is equally or more at fault for the pace of play issues. the players are the one who refuse to stay in the box, or refuse to throw the ball on a timely basis. and they have resisted any attempts by management to require them to do so. people's attention span had gotten shorter, baseball has not adapted like other sports. getting the umpires to enforce the rules and the players to play by them is the first step to 2 hour games again.- 1,851 replies

the lions arent going to make the playoffs next year so they should lose every single game to ensure they get the #1 pick.

Michigan's Hamlet-like debate about its own soul re: transfers and NIL
buddha replied to romad1's topic in College Sports
i think harbaugh wants to be at michigan but sees that he needs the ability to compete at michigan. if they dont change the rules on nil, and dont give him more leeway on transfers in the portal, michigan will fall further behind. he'll likely get his nil changes, but the portal? i doubt the admissions department will change for the whims of the football team. i mean, they have surely bent in the past and have accumstomed to bending to allow a's in high school gym and archery let kids into michigan who have no business being there, but now they need to bend to let in kids who dont really go to high school into school, and to let in transfers who have been majoring in underwater basket weaving (and likely getting c's) into school. they'll do it, but it will take the institution time to move. harbaugh needs it to move now. -
if there was a qb prospect at #1 and the lions blew the game, then yes i would be mad. but there isnt this year. thibodeaux and hutchinson are very similar prospects. staying at 2 is not a big deal this year.

i like JEIII but he is really optimistic about the pistons. part of me is always wary of reporters who need to say nice things about management in order to keep their sources happy. -

flores won 9 games with a qb who cant throw past 5 yards. that's pretty good.
