  1. Fighting for three inches and loses the ball.
  2. I believe Lamar is now 16-1 against the NFC. That is insane. I take this stat to mean there is no player in the NFL like him and no scout team that can prepare a team to play him. On top of that, Baltimore was using Detroit as its measuring stick. They hadn’t played their best game yet offensively but did so against Detroit, which got outcoached and out-executed. Baltimore was not using Arizona as a measuring stick. Motivation matters in the NFL. You just can’t be dialed up to 11 every game. Finally, Baltimore is built for fall football outdoors. Detroit is not, especially without Montgomery. If Detroit meets Baltimore in a dome in Vegas for the Super Bowl, it will be a different game.
  3. Don’t look now… Denver up on KC, 21-9, midway through the 4th.
  4. Hate the Seahawks.
  5. MJJ is a class act. Hope all is well with him.
  6. I know garbage time started early on Sunday but they didn’t give Gibbs many carries until garbage time. I think the staff feels like they need to protect him. But I also heard Gibbs marveling last week that he didn’t know how Montgomery handled that big workload.
  7. They are shooting shots across Jaymo’s bow all the time. At this point he is a gadget player. But basically so is Gibbs.
  8. TJ Hockenson looks like a Viking.
  9. Gibbs ran for four on their first carry. I don’t know why they didn’t hand it off again. When they didn’t, and dialed up that weak pass to the flat, I realized they were playing scared.
  10. His lack of mobility is part of it but the bigger issue yesterday was that Campbell went into the game basically saying we don’t have a running game without Montgomery and we don’t trust Gibbs. Then they demonstrated they don’t trust Gibbs. At that point it was open season on Goff. Montgomery has been their offensive MVP. Just like Gurley was in LA.
  11. Carter sure looks like a fail on Holmes’s part, though the fail may have been Sheila’s. It wouldn’t surprise me if she (or her, Wood, Spielman, and Holmes together) made the decision that his baggage was not something they wanted connected to the franchise. In any case, the Lions could have used a player like him against Geno and Lamar.
  12. John Harbaugh has been doing this for a very long time. And obviously coaching is in his blood. His crew dominated our crew. His long term plan for Lamar worked to perfection yesterday. If they were going to pay Lamar, they can’t treat him like a disposable running back anymore. They have to make him a passer. He hadn’t had a breakout game under Monken yet but yesterday was it.
  13. He’s only played five games or something but he is already the heart of the offense.
  14. They also still need a David Montgomery Jr. Without him they do not have offensive balance.
  15. Campbell’s hallmark has been his aggressiveness. The Baltimore staff took it right away. Baltimore was the aggressor and the Lions — coaches and players — were on their heels all game Baltimore won the coin toss, took the ball, challenged the Lions defense to keep up with Lamar’s versatility and they couldn’t do it. They exposed Jack Campbell as a rookie. I still think he will get there someday but he was not there yesterday On Detroit’s first offensive drive they gave it to Gibbs for four yards. Not bad. Had Montgomery been healthy they would have fed him again, played to their strength, and given the defense time to regroup. But they were afraid to put too much on Gibbs — and I’m sure Baltimore knew it. (Even with garbage time he only got 11 carries.) Instead Goff threw an incomplete on a weak throw to the flat, then took a sack. The defense was already shell-shocked. By the second offensive play of the game it was easy to see the Lions were in for a long day. Yes, Detroit’s lack of depth at RB and CB got exposed. Their lack of high end skill at DT got exposed. They could still use a big, physical receiver who can make contested catches. (Josh Reynolds is not quite this guy.) But they fell into the same habits that have plagued them against Hurts and Geno Smith in the past. The coaches did not have the team ready to play and they should take this one on the chin.
  16. Even though losing to AFC teams has nothing to do with NFC playoff seeds, I’m still hoping Miami wins against Philly tonight. 😉
  17. I blame the coaches for this debacle. They were not ready for anything Baltimore had for them on offense or defense.
  18. It’s good to see the refs remember they can call holding.
  19. Campbell doesn’t know who he’s covering.
  20. Blatant illegal contact against Baltimore missed by the officials.
  21. A complete team loss. Offense, defense, special teams.
