  1. Dan Campbell is the coach I thought Mike Vrabel was going to be... and is.
  2. It’s based on performance over the past two seasons. This, of course, is asinine in the NFL. And while it is admittedly slightly less asinine when applied to offensive lines, how does it apply in any meaningful way to a team like the Lions where arguably the best lineman has only played one season? I wonder how the QB rankings will look when they consider Bobby Layne.
  3. The other day Sirius XM’s “Moving the Chains” show with Pat Kirwan and Jim Miller was at Lions training camp. They interviewed Campbell and Holmes, and in both interviews you could hear the consistency in their visions. They talk about grit and how they have gotten players who reflect this. They also interviewed D’Andre Swift who talked about it. The most interesting thing was the interview with Jared Goff. He sounded confident and in command. He said his goal for the preseason was to execute on his third and fourth reads. Sure, I’ll believe it when I see it, but I didn’t expect to hear Goff so dialed in. Jim Millet is a homer, but Pat Kirwan has always been skeptical of the Lions (and rightly so). I was surprised to hear Kirwan start to gush a little bit about Holmes and Campbell. They are building it the right way, and though he doesn’t expect more than 8 wins for the Lions this season, he expects them to be in playoff contention by next season.
  4. No CBA for owners. And these owners… if Ross had gotten away with it, you would see the Wild West.
  5. I still have them doubling last year’s record at 6-9-2. Jaymo will probably not be ready before Thanksgiving and I figure he will need a few games before the offense really starts to click. And I’m not sure we have the depth yet to weather the inevitable injuries. But the schedule looks somewhat soft so maybe the two projected ties end up as wins for 8-9.
  6. Must have just happened. Is it dog sledding season somewhere?
  7. Am I the only one who didn’t know the defenseman we just signed had a torn Achilles?
  8. I've been thinking about this as Yzerman has prioritized size. I'm sure he remembers having been on "soft" teams and maybe he feels his talents would have been better suited if he had more gritty players around him from earlier in his career. When he finally has his roster of hulks, might he then be more likely to pick up a diminutive scorer like himself -- a Gaudreau, DeBrincat, Savoie?
  9. Speaking of Cup contending status, let’s assume the playoff window opens for the Wings in the 2023-24 season. Who is going to be the Shanahan who they bring in from outside the team to put them over the hump?
  10. Maybe I’m missing something, but as nearly as I can tell, the Klingberg rumor is just a speculation by a blogger based on the fact that the Wings have money and Klingberg wants it.
  11. Yeah Chiarot is like 235 lbs. I think he is now the heaviest guy on the roster. This team is not going to get pushed around.
  12. The other Detroit GMs need to hold an intervention for Avila. “Al, you have a problem.”
  13. Yzerman is too proud to tank. And they will undoubtedly be a lottery team again for at least one more year. Maybe they get lucky after getting unlucky in 2020.
  14. I, for one, love sites that look like they were optimized for Netscape Navigator, with pop up ads that pop up on pop up ads. I agree that the offense will surprise people, but probably not until week 7 or 8 when Jaymo gets healthy. But they also have a pretty favorable schedule.
  15. Yzerman is everything Avila is not. 😂
  16. Maybe, but both he and Ned were a tale of two goalies. Ned has one year left and Cossa is two seasons away at minimum. And what are the odds a third round pick will make an NHL roster? Slim, but there is a 100% chance that Husso will play next season.
  17. https://www.mlive.com/redwings/2022/07/marco-kasper-checks-all-the-boxes-for-steve-yzerman-and-red-wings.html The bolded part speaks to the concern about his production.
  18. Yzerman has drafted a lot of size. Even though Savoie is basically Yzerman's size (5'9" 179), Kasper is five inches taller (6'2"). And comparing him to current NHL players it looks like Savoie is likely to top out not much more than his current weight but Kasper (at 187) may top 200 lbs before his development is done. In three years the Red Wings will be a very punishing team to play against.
  19. As far as what Yzerman thinks about the 18-year-old, he said, “We think he has underrated skill, and we think he has the ability to play in our top six”, to ESPN’s Emily Kaplan. https://www.wingingitinmotown.com/2022/7/7/23199349/red-wings-select-marco-kasper-at-8th-overall-in-2022-nhl-draft
  20. I didn't instigate anything. I just disagreed with those who were mad at Chris I that he didn't voice their anger toward Avila during Lalonde's press conference. You seem to be offended that I dare disagree. That's up to you, dude, but don't pretend you're not the one chasing me around trying to police differences of opinion.
  21. So the Browns have now effectively used four first round picks, a third round pick, and a fourth round pick to get two fifth round picks and Jacoby Brissett as their starter for week 1 and indefinitely thereafter.
  22. Nobody on this board is saying a word about Bob Wojnowski, but if anyone knows how to make a headline it is him. And he made one. Just not the one this board wanted.
  23. What happened to “respectful”? Oh it was a red herring to begin with. LOL Whatever. It would have been low class and even damaging to turn Lalonde’s press conference into a news event about Avila’s job status.
  24. Yes, Ilitch's comments at this very press conference were turned into a headline in the Detroit Free Press. Have you heard of it? "Detroit Tigers owner Christopher Ilitch 'very pleased with the progress' in 2022" You must realize that Christopher Ilitch is rich and has been his whole life. Literally every time in his adult life that he has said something he has had to expect that it would be printed in the paper. Certainly he knows this about a press conference. And certainly he has a media consultant to prepare him for a press conference like this. And certainly they discussed the inevitable question about the Tigers, and certainly they chose to answer it this way. Of course there are a lot of fans who had the misguided belief that this team might contend this season, and some of them may have maintained that delusion after Riley Greene got injured in the pre-season. I don't know what fans like this expected once the whole staff got injured, then their new acquisition Meadows got dizzy. The wheels fell off the wagon. But they have had some young pitchers come up and perform well, and once Riley Greene arrived it is like a new team offensively. Still, these fans are butt hurt that their fantasy of contending this season won't come true and they wanted Ilitch to use Lalonde's press conference to rub Avila's face in ****. Yeah, that would have been real classy. "Here you go Lalonde, this is what you're getting in for. I'm taking your moment in the spotlight to send a message to another one of my employees. And guess what? If you have a rough season I'm the kind of boss who would publicly embarrass you too." I agree that Avila has stuck around far too long. But fans like this are living in a fantasy world. An owner who did the things fans like this want would turn the team from a sad sack into a legitimate laughing stock.
