For me it's similar. When I played poker with friends it wasn't to make money. It was just to be away from the women and drinking/smoking/goofing off. I had a crown royal bag full of quarters and the winnings went in there. Then at some point I used those quarters in the machine at Meijer. For casinos the first time I went was in 1996 or 97... when Windsor was on a boat. I walked up to two machines, picked one on the right and almost immediately someone played the one on the left. The left won $500. I was in college and had just paid my tuition bill and had the thought "If I picked that one my tuition is paid for". It left a sour taste. I still go to vegas and will play the slots but thats just for fun. I budget some money for us to play around on those before we head up to the room for the night. It's not to win. It's just a way to have a drink and kill time. I'll never be one of those "sit at the table" guys.

I've had to be a parent advocate and fight with school boards and admins.... it's not fun. Have spoken up at meetings. However I cringed so often at my peers even those who were on "our side". They'd make arguments that have nothing to do with the problem we're trying to solve. They'd mock. Make threats. My favorites were "We're calling Fox 2 Problem Solvers!" or "We're calling Feiger". We also had some people who were like "Dude, our state rep comes into our coffee shop, I'll talk to him." A few times I would talk to our superintendent offline and say something like "I'm not with them... that's not how I do business".

You are innocent until proven guilty and they were never proven guilty but instead executed, one by a coward private citizen who picked a fight and was getting his ass kicked so he shot him, and the other by a cop who made the decision that stealing some cigars is a capital crime.

I don't begrudge a business owner from wanting to make a profit. Not at all. They have the right to make as much money as they can. That strategy is a business decision for them to make. It would be a tough marketing sell and you would have to make sure you have a quality org to maintain competitiveness, and you have to balance the retention of those quality people as they want to win as well as simply do a good job and make money. I care about spending to the degree it prevents the team from being flexible when it needs to adapt to circumstances. I don't care about it lining an owner's pockets or whatever. Their franchise is growing in value. They're ok.

that's what I met by "accident". If you have a good system and coaching then you'll get your bullpen but it will change from year to year and you won't be able to predict who those gems will be consistently. I didn't mean to suggest that just any old team will churn out a good bullpen. You still have to do the good work. But the strength is in numbers so that the law of averages is in your favor. Don't bank on a defined 3 guys panning out. Have 10 in the mix and see who rises.

The thing with going to school in the dark is it depends I think on where you are in that zone.... Do kids really walk to school anymore? We once left a quick game at Comerica Park in the first week of July and it was broad daylight. Like 9:15 pm. It worked out because I was with my brother in law from TX and he wanted to see 8 Mile road and felt better about it while daylight. So off we went. I had no idea it was such a tourist thing.

Good bullpens happen by accident. You don't develop one. Strength in numbers and coaching and you'll find a couple of good ones, milk them, then discard. Short shelf life.
