This is true. Any strategy that has better outcomes on average, may not have a higher probability of success in any specific combination of conditions. That's what you pay a manager to figure out.

The Tigers have killed themselves chasing the long ball. I don't really care what the analytics say on this question - it may be good individually for guys to chase the long ball, but the lack of OBP destroys a *teams* ability to pressure the opposing pitching staff. What is the stat for that? For instance, for for all the K's, the HRs mean Riley's wRC isn't down that much even though his OPB is in the toilet. Which means guys on base in front of him are stranded and guys behind him lose RBI opportunity.

And Riley's Dwar has taken a bigger hit than his OWar. i think there is a reasonable chance he can clean up his offensive approach in the off-season - if he's willing, but it might be tougher to get back that 22 yr old magic in the OF, especially in a guy that has to get all his credit catching the ball since his arm has always been a noodle.

looking it again, I think it went under his glove. I'm going to guess is that what messed him up was Javy making the bounce throw already so low to the ground. Tork's muscle memory was probably expecting it bounce higher than it did and probably to be a harder throw than Javy managed. Still a great play by Baez and no justice at all to get an error on it.
