You aren't missing anything. Detroit is an original 1901 AL franchise with an established brand that, while not as iconic as the Yanks or Sox or Dodgers, isn't far behind. It has a passionate, well-establisbed and loyal fanbase that has proven it will spend money on the team and it is located in a mid to upper mid range metro area population wise, and one with some wealth as well. If Pizza Jr coughed this franchise up, somebody else with a vision could make way more money with the franchise parked right where it is at 2100 Woodward. Moreso than they would make relocating it to Nashville or Charlotte or San Antonio -
I'm curious about Chris Meyers... anything there or is he more org depth? Can't really deny the numbers in Lakeland or WMI so far

Again, there are two questions here... the macro question, which is why is this ballclub still a projected 70-75 win ball club after year five of the rebuild. And on that score, Al Avila is terrible and deserved to be fired. And then there's the micro question of why a projected 70-75 win team has a lineup that is playing like a 50-55 win team. And on that score, as was the case last year, players have track records and it's reasonable to expect them to meet expectations. This whole debate kinda minimizes the contributions of the player to the success and failures of the team. And more than anything else, that's why they are where they are in the micro... not Al or AJ, the players.

Before his last start in Houston, people were giving ERod way more crap than he deserved and subsequently blaming Al. In general, there's tons to complain about with Al's GM tenure, but the last free agent class isn't a legit one. He made a lot of logical signings that were recieved as such at the time

The team underwent some organizational restructuring late last year, particularly relating to player development. The upshot being that AJ's fingerprints were likely all over that

I am still not sure that all the player development hires after he was hired is a coincidence. Which, if that means AJ is more involved on that side of the house, is absolutely a good thing.

If Hinch got more out of this god awful team last year, why isn't he doing it this year? Have you considered that explaining the Tigers situation away on luck (both their success last year and failure this year) kinda undermines the whole point that all of the Tigers success last year is because of AJ Hinch? Again, people want to have it both ways and it doesn't work.
