Another way to look at it is that, with Turnbull due back sometime late year/next year, the Tigers have to cover somewhere around 25-30 starts with some combination of their depth... having Pineda around, even with the injury risk, gives you a solid option to cover some (or possibly even most) of that load. For the terms ($5 mil+ incentives), it's seems low risk/high reward for them.

My guess is that he slots in as a 4th starter (behind Skubal, before Manning) when the Tigers ultimately make that call. But that's up to Al/AJ lol

Also, iirc, Manaea has one year and Montes two left on their contracts. If you execute a trade for either, you are risking whatever odds they may want to test free agency. Like you suggest, if their playoff chances weren't fringey, it would be one thing... but idk, it's risky to make that kinda move with where they are at now. Depth will serve them better at least in the short term... if they are performing better than expected in July, maybe we are having a different conversation

I'm kinda working off the assumption that Alexander will still be making some starts this year. But having Pineda at least means you aren't rolling through 162 while rolling the dice on just Alexander to hold down #5. If Pineda stays healthy (not a guarantee), he will do just fine for someone holding down a 4/5 starting slot. At the terms listed by Jon Heyman, seems like a pretty good value.

I see a lot of frustration on social media that they didn't go for Montes or Manaea, but given that those two very well could have required Manning as a piece of the package, I almost prefer this result . Good short term depth addition, gives them more flexibility with Alexander as well.

I don't know if they'll get him, but I'm glad that they are at least trying for Grienke.... makes a ton of sense for a 4/5 starter and someone for the younger pitchers to spend time with. Could be a Kenny Rogers-esque situation.

I'd imagine there's still a chance the Tigers land a 5th starter in free agency, but the competition is stiff enough where we may want to get comfortable with the idea of having to plug that hole with Alexander and Co. Landing Chafin lessens the blow there.... not landing any additional pitching improvements at all would have been a disappointment.
