slothfacekilla Posted June 24 Posted June 24 I feel like Russo is just stating what he assumes is happening honestly. The other day he said Minnesota offered the Wings a "huge" package. Which is pretty impossible with the assets they have. I think that was talked about in the other thread though I can't keep track anymore. The talking heads online are getting a lot of traffic from the Larkin stuff I'll tell you that! Quote
Hongbit Posted June 24 Posted June 24 I feel bad for Larkin. He got a taste of what it’s like playing in big games at the Olympics. He’s probably very tired of being on a team that continues to fail and yet the front office has no accountability for the results. His turning 30 very likely had a lot to do with his change of heart. He doesn’t have forever but he plays for an owner and GM that are seemingly willing to wait forever to build a contender. The NHL is a results business in every market but this one. I understand why fans are mad at him but they should be applauding that somebody is willing to stand up and demand better from the people making the hockey decisions for this storied franchise. 1 Quote

Jason_R Posted June 24 Posted June 24 We don’t necessarily know that Larkin will only go to Minnesota. All I take from that report from Minnesota’s beat guy is that Billy G is working hard to get something done. This seems believable to me. If he wants Larkin bad enough, the onus is on him. Maybe a third team would take picks in 27 and 28 for assets that help Detroit now. Quote

Not the worst strategy on his part if he wants the team he goes to to be as strong as possible when he gets there. - just sayin' there can be plans within plans...... Quote

gehringer_2 Posted June 24 Posted June 24 The risk for Larkin is that he doesn't get traded. So in picking his list he has to weigh the outcome of going back to the Wings locker room vs going to a team he doesn't want to play for. So what is the locker room dynamic? How sure is he of his reception if he ends up still in Detroit. I'm sure he's made some estimate of all those things (which may or may end up accurate!) and I think we have to assume he's talked to some number of players on the team - or at least the ones he is close to. We only get to see the result if and when it plays out Quote

Hongbit Posted June 24 Posted June 24 FWIW, if he isn’t traded and refuses to play, his contract won’t count against the cap and the remaining years will be tolled and not accrue. Quote

Because nothing compels Detroit to comply with his demand. He has to work with SY to find an acceptable trade by giving him more than just three asset strapped teams to work with or come back to Detroit. He can't force SY to take a poor deal..SY can force him to comply with the terms of his contract. Quote

We won’t know until the trade is done. But it wouldn’t surprise me if teams become more reluctant to give out NMCs as a result of situations like this. It also wouldn’t surprise me if Stevie got Guerin and Brisson on the phone and said “You guys both want to move Larkin to the Wild. This is what the Red Wings need for that to happen. See what you can pull together. In the meantime, I will also look for trades, but I’m not going to limit myself to three teams, I’m not going to take less than market value, and I’m not going to promise a trade will happen.” Brisson represents a lot of players. He also doesn’t want to burn a bridge with a GM and franchise he will undoubtedly work with again. He has an interest in making this work. Quote

Buddha can chime in on this but while contractually you force him to play, you can't force him to play well. I am curious though, he must have thought about whether he would be willing to keep playing or not but we don't know. And practically speaking, can the Wings start the season without him and with no return? I think they could get away with trading him for good picks and then being worse, but to have nothing and be worse isn't going to go over well, so the pressure goes both ways. I suppose lightning could strike and Kasper and MBN both start the season at a point per game and Larkin is sitting at home un-missed and unloved, but don't ask me to bet on it. Quote

buddha Posted June 24 Posted June 24 i would love for yzerman to play hardball and let him sit. i just dont think he will. ultimately, he'll try to make the best deal possible. Quote

People can diss Chris Ilitch all they want, but he's no fool and he's not going let any ego pissing match damage the value of his franchise any more than it has to. so yeah - it should be 'take the best deal and move on' Edited June 24 by gehringer_2 Quote
