Michigan Men's Basketball: AKA the Michigan revenue sport that doesn't have an uber jaded fanbase waiting in the dark for failure.

aren't the NIL deals public? In Michigan the salary of every single university employee at UM is public and published once a year by statute - are they letting NIL deals violate the law on this?

of course they are, but not as much

getting rid of the money rules is the best thing to happen to michigan.  now they dont have to keep up this facade about not paying players.  now that its out in the open, michigan can unleash the money cannon of one of the richest, most sports obsessed fan bases in the country.

and they have.

The money cannon at UM isn’t any different in basketball than Kentucky, Kansas, and UNC.

The difference is in the coach.  That’s the real special sauce. They’ve hit a home run with May.

The other blue bloods I mentioned just figured the program was strong to enough to prosper with lesser guys because of the brand.  Turns out that doesn’t matter anymore now that other people have the cash.  Having a stiff like Mark Pope or Hubert Williams just because they’re an alum doesn’t work anymore.

i agree, but they can compete now for players they had no chance at before.

No clue whose job it is, but don't sell Michigan's GM short.

They made a deep run last year by totally rebuilding their roster from the previous year.  They are making another deep run this year when 7 or their 9 rotation players were not on last year's roster.  The person identifying the talent to spend the money on deserves a lot of credit.

Elite 8 is 50% B10, and all 'classic' B10 schools.

And MSU could have been another but for a slight improvement in their 3 point shooting.

Holy crap, what an shot by UConn!!!   Bye bye Duke!  🤭

two point lead and the ball, all Boozer has to do is hold the ball, they have to foul him and he can put it out of reach at the line. Terrible end to a huge performance.

The wife and i were just back from a dog walk and assuming that one was in the bank for Duke.  I just get done unleashing the pups and check my phone. "HOLY CRAP!  UCONN IS WITHIN 3 with 27 seconds to go"  scramble to TV and lost our minds at that ending.   The tournament is a thing man.

So that was the lesser brother of the ultrastar.  i'm worried that with the bulk additions of various kid brothers and coach kids in the Michigan sports that we might see one of those happen.  Then again, back to your point the issue is put the best players on the floor during critical moments.  Charlie May wasn't trying to shoot a 3 during the competitive parts of the game.

I realize the lesser Boozer kid is better than a comp to Charlie May but still.

jon scheyer is from the (rich) suburbs of chicago.  i used to work for a guy whose kids went to the same high school.  said scheyer was dumber than a box of rocks.  now that was a long time ago, and he did go to duke (lol) so maybe he's picked up some smarts over the years, but still...

then again, you dont have to be smart to coach sports.

the best part is now we dont havr to watch that stupid christian laettner shot over and over again while the announcers fellate duke.  they can show the shot that BEAT duke over and over.

the sad part is that it wasnt coach k's arrogant ass on the sideline that had to endure it.  scheyer may not be a rhodes scholar, but he doesnt come across as a hypocritical smug jack ass like "coach k."

That shot by Mullins was epic, but just want to point out the presence of mind by Karaban to make that pass with 2 seconds left was incredible. I think 99 out of 100 players force a shot there in panic-mode. He knew he didn't have a shot so perfect pass to Mullins to hit a shot in rhythm.

The inexperience of a freshman not realizing he should just hold the ball next to the experience of a 4 year player in Karaban with two natties under his belt is quite stark.

With THAT said, boneheaded decision by the Duke players, but that is on the coach moreso IMHO, you gotta call a timeout and explain the moment. "there is exactly 10 seconds left. we don't have to get it over the line. Just hold the ball until they foul you"

I didn’t think about that all but you’re and it’s awesome.   This will forever replace the Laettner shot.

Laettner hit his shot from the free throw line.  The most impressive thing about that moment was the inbounds pass.  Still one of the most iconic moments in NCAA Tournament history, but it pales in comparison to this one.
