There’s only two things I can imagine happening: (1) the Trumpers allow a free and fair election to turn them out and everything goes back to normal, or (2) the Trumpers do everything they can to retain power in an extralegal manner and force the 70% to heel. Which is more likely?

Probably outside the security perimeter. Meaning that in order to reassemble the audience at the conclusion of any lightning event, they’ll have to process everyone through security again.

Maybe Trump will get lucky and the weather will be fine. The other thing the Dome of Electric Death will do is attract bugs. A lot of them.

These bugs will swarm the super-bright lights that are studded along the entirety of each steel arc. After they buzz around the lights for a while, the bugs will die. And fall. Their little dead bug bodies will rain down on the audience in a steady trickle all night long. Maybe the people in attendance won’t notice. But if I were there I’d probably wear a hat.

For our semiquincentennial I want Donald Trump on stage ranting like a lunatic. We squandered our inheritance. We should be confronted with our choices.

America doesn’t need a celebratory retrospective.

We need a mirror.
