I don't believe we've touched on this topic yet, but I would not be surprised to learn that this particular group of "refugees" are the most strident, most vocal, most retrograde, most political white supremacist activists in South Africa.

I'd be curious to know the age profile of RSA emigres to the US. It's usually young people that pick up and leave home. But in the RSA case young people would have been born post Apartheid - so that would be one narrative. If it's older people (>40), that gives a different narrative.

So many ironies. On the one hand, "The Truth will set you free" is one of most salient lines in all of Christian teaching (with a big thank-you to the Greeks). Only commitment to Truth can break tribal and clan loyalties and create the bond that can tie together people that would other wise have no reason to be allied. That outlook is what provided the  permission for the intellectual revolutions of the Renaissance and Enlightenment to happen in Europe - to create the modern world. While here in the US we have this huge base of self described Christians, simultaneously lamenting the loss the Christian dominance in the US, while having become the single largest deniers of truth, whether moral, scientific, or political, in the society.

That's one score on which it's unfortunate that the movie and video markets are so balkanized. A movie like Mr. Smith goes to Washington or "12 Angry Men" or a TV series like "The Defenders" could actually reach a significant % of the population the writers wanted to reach. In this media environment the best you are likely to do is reach a small percentage of people who probably already think like the writers.

Its doing as well as a prestige/pop series can do in this marketplace and environment.    I say prestige/pop because the quality is such that its drawing in those who want their media smart enough not to talk down to the audience and pop because regular star wars fans are seeing it as a series for adults that works in the other universe of Ewoks, Chewbaccas and friendly droids.

This plane is not Trump's biggest grift, but it seems to sell better than the ****coins and investment funds.  Dems hopefully will not let any Trump distraction from keeping them pounding on this.

At 12 billion a year it would take a century to spend what we did in Iraq, and it represents only 1 1/2% of the regular DOD budget,  so I don't really think that level of expenditure was a serious driver.
