I am still waiting for a report that says we reached out and he turned the program down. I hope the university at least made the call to Cignetti. I know this isn't the old days of college football and power dynamics have changed, but I have a hard time wrapping my head around someone telling Michigan no so they can stay at Indiana. I know things have changed though. Cignetti may have earned himself more autonomy at Indiana than he'll ever have at Michigan. Just think about what he's accomplished for that program and where his achievement stands in that history. He may be just another coach at Michigan. Maybe that's something he considers important. Plus, he's in the playoff now with his program that he built. He just won a Big 10 championship. I think we can all agree that a football season like this at Indiana likely means a fall from grace next season, at least in the past. But you typed it yourself, things have changed. Its quite a change to older mindsets that have followed these teams for decades. Quote

I actually don't hate this idea the more I marinate in it, but I never had Monken on my radar as an option. He was the former Georgia OC when they were a national title winning team in the early part of the 2020s. He brings lots of college coaching and recruiting experience at big time programs from Georgia and LSU in the SEC to Oklahoma State in the Big 12. Plus he was a prior college Head Coach, albeit at Southern Miss. If you're willing to consider a coordinator like Schumann or Haines, Monken isn't really that far off from them. I don't love it, but I don't hate it either. Quote

He was the OC at one of the primer schools in college football and a pretty good one. Georgia won two National Championships during his time there. In one of the two games they bombed their opponent and flat out embarrassed TCU by scoring over 50 points. He had one of the top scoring offenses for total points scored in the 2021 and 2022 seasons at UGA. He also had offenses that were close to the top in time of possession, rushing and passing yards. Not to mention, all of the NFL talent he and Kirby were able to recruit and develop on offense during his time at UGA. He's got plenty of big and small time college coaching and recruitment experience between his time at UGA, LSU, Oklahoma State, and as Head Coach at Southern Miss. Quote

Motor City Sonics Posted Thursday at 08:03 PM Posted Thursday at 08:03 PM Why would anyone turn down a job where the AD could be fired at any time, there is no permanent President in place and it's only a matter of time before news of yet another scandal breaks. Oh, oh yeah, because it's an ELITE program. Sure it is. Quote
Mr.TaterSalad Posted Friday at 01:31 PM Posted Friday at 01:31 PM Well OK then. I really didn't think there was anything to him resigning when he did at Utah, but maybe where there is smoke there is fire. This would be about as good a hire as Michigan could expect to get at this point. Quote
Hongbit Posted Friday at 02:01 PM Posted Friday at 02:01 PM Exactly. This is almost the perfect hire but what happened at Utah? Everyone seemed to think that he was retiring. Why else would he leave there. Quote
Hongbit Posted Friday at 02:17 PM Posted Friday at 02:17 PM Best I can tell is Utah have long had a succession plan where former player and current assistant Morgan Scally takes over. As happens many times in sports and in business, either the guy in waiting or the administration became impatient that the 66 year old guy was staying too long. Sometimes the succession plan becomes more important and the actual business plan. Quote

Utah also just signed that massive private equity deal while Michigan has at least temporarily killed a similar deal in the Big Ten. I wouldn't discount the impact that has on his thinking. Quote
Hongbit Posted Friday at 02:38 PM Posted Friday at 02:38 PM Good point about the PE deal. I can definitely see him saying that he doesn’t want any part of that. Quote

buddha Posted Friday at 04:28 PM Posted Friday at 04:28 PM typically after scandals like these you want to bring in the most trusted, non-scandal person. someone who can promise stability and a return to the morals that the university likes to think it stands for. whittingham would accomplish that for michigan. Mr.TaterSalad Posted Friday at 06:07 PM Posted Friday at 06:07 PM Holy **** Michigan hired Wittingham. What a great hire. I am stunned they did it. Quote

His most important role may be to develop his replacement. Quote
